SB-600 as a slave flash??

I've had my D70 and SB-600 for a while. I've used it in TTL on camera and in Commander mode and it works great.

I'd like to use the SB-600 as a standard slave flash unit triggered from the on-board speedlight. I've tried it in TTL mode and it doesn't trigger when not on the camera. The manual talks about using the SB-600 as a slave on page 73 with closeup photography. It is using it with a SB-800 attached to camera with a cord. I'd like to trigger it with on-board speedlight. I've set the SB-600 in TTL as indicated in that article and no go. It does not trigger when on-board speedlight - in TTL mode or Manual mode - is set as high as 1/2 power.

I can set the SB-600 in TTL mode, and on camera, a lightning bolt shows next to the TTL letters. But off camera, the bolt disappears. The manual on pp 74 shows a bolt next to TTL and talks about TTL "auto flash" mode. This description on pp74 seems to be talking about using the SB600 on camera.

Will SB-600 operate as an off-camera slave flash unit? - triggered by other flashes going off. Recall that I have other slave flashes in my studio, so Commander won't work for me, since the first flash in the pair will trigger the rest of the studio flashes and they will not be able to recycle fast enough to work the second time.

I'd like to use it the studio with other studio flash units and use SB-600 as an area light to light a prop.
Anybody done something like this?
How do you setup the SB-600 to operate that way?

THanks much,
ww

Since the SB-600 does not have a PC connector, you can get Nikon's SU-4 or one those optical triggers built into a hot shoe like this one

or if you have a wein peanut on hand, a PC to hot shoe adapter like this

So what we're saying is that as smart as this SB-600 is, it won't do a simple slave function. That is trigger from another flash going off?? It's gotta have help from a Nikon adapter for $75 or from a 3rd party adapter for $24. Wow... Pretty strange.

Thanks.

it would have been nice for nikon to throw in the su-4 as a built in function but it's just not there. That's why my other flashes are used Sunpak 383's, CLS is nice but too pricey for me

I can drive my sb600 as a slave from the on board flash or from a SB800. Its just a matter of choosing the right chanel and making sure the flash is in slave mode - not TTL TTL IMHO does not make sense in a master slave situation.

I can even drive my SB800 and SB600 from the on board flash however when I use the SB800 a a master I can control the power of both the SB800 and the SB600. Have a look at your manual and follow the instructions closely.

If you want to use TTL mode with the SB-600, go into the CSM (on the flash, not the D70) and turn on the wireless mode - do this by shifting through the options until you get to the squiggly line and turn that on. You then need to set the flash to Channel 3, Group A.

Set your D70 to Commander Mode, TTL. Then your SB-600 will fire off camera. If you want to do flash compensation, you will need to adjust this on the camera, not the flash.

If you want manual control of the light output, on the D70 CSM Flash Mode go to Commander Mode, and then Manual. Note that this is different than just Manual flash mode. Make sure you are choosing the M subgroup of the Commander Mode option. You are limited to dialing in by one stop increments in Manual Commander Mode, whereas TTL can be adjusted by 1/3 stop.

If you have other non-TTL flashes you are using in the setup, you will need to eliminate the preflashes from the D70 popup flash by either running in Manual flash control, or setting the AE-L/AF-L button to FV Lock. Pressing it once after that will fire a round of flashes, locking exposure, and eliminate preflashes after that.

One final problem if you have non-TTL flashes, the communication pre-flashes between the D70 and the SB-600 may trigger your other flashes. I've heard of some people having this problem, but I haven't experienced it because I only use an SB-800/SB-600 setup. I don't know a workaround for this, and it would be compounded for you because the SB-600 doesn't have the SU-4 mode. Maybe some of the options mentioned earlier in the thread will work for this.

In addition to setting the flash up as REMOTE unit (through the custom menu), you will have to set it up in channel 3 and group A.

Speed is significant and interesting but accuracy is downright fascinating
