STF CHALLENGE 8

Format

There will be two galleries created for Challenge 8…

Gallery 1: Eligible Gallery

This is the main gallery for participants who use their Sony digcams to take their entered photos during the challenge period.

Gallery 2: Exhibition Gallery

This includes all participants who want to submit their Sony digicams photos taken prior to the challenge dates and also those who want to submit photos that were taken by non- Sony digicams.. These two categories will be judged as one.

Times and Dates

Challenge 8 will run from 12:01 am January 7th, 2002 to 12 MN, January 14th, 2002

TOPIC:

“THINGS IN MOTION”

Rules and Criteria for this Topic:

You can go at least 3 ways here:

Action or Static Shots:

Catching a rapidly moving action as if it was a still, creating the oxymoron, still motion. A really good action shot still gives us the essence of motion before and after the captured moment. …for example, catching a
hummingbird in full flight or a snowboarder doing a 360.

Dynamic or Motion Shots:

This aspect allows the artist a lot of creativity in creating visible motion on digital film. With varying of shutter speed, light and subject, the artist catches the action in motion. For example, car lights at night using a long exposure.

Burst 3/Rapid sequence shots:

For those of us lucky enough to get an opportunity to use this effect…go for it. You will be allowed to enter all 3 shots as 1 entry but it must be reduced in size to at least a 5 X 15 inch size at 72 ppi and they must appear side by side .

Of course, knowing the innovative talent in our STF group, I’m sure will find many other way to show “Things in Motion”. You can POSE IT, STAGE IT, drop it, throw it, swing it, roll it, push it , dunk it, smash it, even shoot it ( be carefulJ)…it doesn’t matter how you achieve the result…the only thing you need to remember is that you have to photograph it!

Number of Entries

Each participant will be allowed 3 photos. This excludes a Burst 3 or sequence entry which comprises 3 photos together but counts as 1 entry.

Attribution of Entries

The artist may enter his or photo either anonymously or with his or her user name. All entries HAVE TO BE TITTLED. You will be allowed to enter your photo into the appropriate gallery by logging in to pbase using user ID stfchallenge and password stfpost. Whoever deletes the gallery intentionally or by mistake will be shot!;)

Preliminary Voting Rule:

Challenge 8 will be open all who take the time to view the entries and make the effort to vote. YOU DO NOT HAVE TO BE A PARTICIPANT OR A STF MEMBER TO VOTE but they do need to be a member of some DP Review forum.

Host Comment:

I chose this topic because it was broad with plentiful subject matter but yet interesting; because it will force us to use our digital camera in ways we may not have tried; because it can be challenging if we choose it to be and also because I LOVE ACTION!!

I hope after reading through this book of rules, you will feel that I have tried to incorporate most of the issues/ concerns that have recently received lively discussions. I also hope that this challenge brings out the passion we all have in photography ; I hope it instigates lively debates and discussions but most importantly of all…I hope we have FUN!!!

Great idea. This is an area where it seems like many have asked a lot of questions. Great opportunity to learn for ourselves and from others!

debadguy,

Hi, congratulations on your win and your new role as host.

A great beginning to Challenge #8. Thanks for the thought that went into putting it together.

I look forward to seeing some unusual and unique entries from our usual list of suspects, and believe your theme will attact some new new participants as well.

Your adoption of the three pictures per artist rule will help the bandwidth problem for viewers without high speed internet access, and letting the artist decide whether to "enter his or her photo either anonymously or with his or her user name" is an innovative approach to an issue where we have yet to reached concensus.

A super start.

The very best.

R.J.

I can't help but jump in and say thanks for recognising my predicament: Not having a Sony camera, but preferring the Sony Challenges (mainly because of the hugely supportive and highly innovative competitors) - so THANKS!

My first entry is already up in the Exhibition gallery!

I was just doing some action shots last week and tonight. And, I forgot all about burst 3, which would be a great use for this kind of shot. If it ever stops raining and the sun comes out, I know just where to go!

I'll have to put on my thinking cap and come up with some other ideas.

Hope everyone has a great time with the new challenge.

debadguy - congrats on winning Challenge 7 and picking a great topic for Challenge 8!!!

I missed out on voting on Challenge 7 because I was busy catching up on some overdue schoolwork - from last semester. However, I spent an hour yesterday taking some solid action photos of my puppies romping in the fresh new snow here in Ohio, so I should be OK to get something entered in Challenge 8 - at least as exhibition (grumble, grumble...).

Good luck and have fun everyone!!

Hi all,

Great topic, and I look forward to participating. I'm pretty new to this challenge, and just wondered if there are any restrictions or guidelines on processing in Photoshop or other image programs? Does the submission have to be Raw or can we get into a little PS creativity?
I suppose there are two levels of PS processing...
A) brightness, contrast etc without altering the actual composition

B) cloning, blurring, removing distracting elements, and altering the actual composition etc.
Are either or both of these acceptable?

Thanks again, and sorry if this has been covered somewhere, I couldn't find it.--MarkF707, LEVBFS but lovin every minute of it!Stickers on, dangling cap.

Hi Mark...
I don't think that the use of photoshop to clear, crop or slightly enhance your picture is inappropriate. Most of us do some editing. But remember that this is a photographic challenge and in my experience from the previous challenges is that a great untouched photograph weighs more positively and gets more attention then a photoshop created one...at least at the STF...

...so keep clicking and good luck...

Thanks,
That is just as I would have guessed, and I just wanted to be sure.

Looking forward to it.

debadguy,

I have a question regarding this challenge. Can we post an entry early on, then replace it later with one I like better? For instance, I'm hoping to get some tonight, and wondering if I should wait to post them (again, assuming they turn out at all)? With only three submissions (which I think is a good idea) we need to scrutinize our shots, but I don't really want to wait until the end to submit some.

Anyone else have thoughts on this? I'm fine either way, just a strategic question.

I'm not "debadguy" but I think this has been done in previous challenge. Some people removed entries to replace them with better pictures. Not even better versions of the same one.--My photo galleries: http://www.pbase.com/davidp

Well , I am going to try and drag myself away from my newborn, and the wife that seems permanently attached to my newborn, and try to get some pics for the challenge.

Unfortunatley, I don't have a Photographers way of thinking (YET) so I might struggle for ideas, but I have to try these things to get any better I guess.

Good luck everyone for this challenge, and may the best pic win..
