Hi all,

The more I read the specs the more I become convinced Pentax actually used the wish list Richard Day compiled with input of most forum members as a basis for the functional design (or at least the functional finalization) of the K10D.

I find some of the specs uncanningly close to the suggestions made. Esp since so many of them seem pretty unique to me.

Perhaps I'm reading too much in it, but I'm sure I'm not the only one?

I can't handle the thought that a major corporation's marketing research department might actually listen to the input provided by users ... ];-)

It would be a novel approach wouldn't it?

It seems to be a trend. Uniden Corp also recently designed some scanner radios according to posts on a user forum, as was confirmed by an employee who regulary visits the forum.

It would not surprise me at all. It would be smart to do so, but a hard thing to admit since it would open the flood gates to the forum member taking ideas back to the manufacturer.

Hi Godfrey and Wim

Strange isn't it? I don't really believe it was just our input, I'm sure much was already well in the pipeline. However, I did get this reply from Pentax UK :-

"The wish list has well received by the product planning dept. I wouldn't expect any further feedback until you see the request appear on the product! That's how I understand the Japanese to work!"

Maybe some notice was taken after all, it'd be good to think so, wouldn't that be nice?

I'm curious to see the thread where this list was compiled. Anyone have the link handy?

If it did drive the features of the K10D, then congratulations to the forum and Richard on designing such a nice product :)

I'm hoping it'll be a new wind in the market. It's become too much of a technology thing, perhaps the K10D may invite other brands to become more photography oriented again... It could be a win-win.

I'm sure it wasn't just our list. But it did contain photographers wishes, not just wishes for impressive specs. And those are probably not unique to the Pentax community. But Pentax is thinking photography again, not technology! I just like the thought that the list may have had an influence. Just like our favour for primes was reported to have taken Pentax by surprise, after which they started the DA limiteds.

The list wasn't compiled online, a few of us contributed via email. There may be a posting of the finished list though.

Wim,

I am sure somebody has indicated that Pentax did consult the wish list that we compiled on the forum and included many of the more reasonable requests. I can't remember who told me this though.

Here's the original post with most of the items listed:

http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1036&message=18544785

The full list as sent to Pentax had a few more additions.

There were around 20 members who contributed to the list, I merely complied them and sent them to Pentax UK as a voice for the collective! Sounds like the Borg doesn't it!

I shall publish a the final list and the list of the contributors when I can get a moment to dig out my notes.

Don't think you are reading too much into it. I've got a copy of the list that someone compiled as a PDF, and the specs (sans items such as PC-sync socket and AA battery support) look uncannily like the specs -- which I might add include a request for a "Li-ion battery option, like all the other brands, with a 'smart' battery design like Sony. A super RCR-V3 system with dedicated charger".

Yep! They delivered!

I might add though I sent a query to CRK yesterday evening on the issue of no apparent fallback to standard battery types should power run out in the field. Their response was telling:

"Dear Mr Cole

At this early stage of development, we believe the K10D will only operate using the dedicated internal Li-Ion battery, or in addition, the optional Li-Ion Battery grip. No doubt this will deliver a huge increase in battery capacity / life overall .

We expect that additional Li-Ion batteries will be available as optional accessories .
Hopefully this should obviate any need for emergency AA battery use.

kind regards

Phil Viggiano
C R Kennedy - Melbourne Australia"

-- so as far as CRK is aware there are no plans for emergency use of standard batteries and that they (or Pentax) are hoping that no one will be inconvenienced out in the field.

Good thing I'm keeping my MZ-5n as a backup regardless of what system I buy :-)

A few more than 95 suggestions!

To be honest, I had not bothered to read it before. People
tend to make unreasonable or pointless requests.

But I see we have a few requests personified in the K10D. I should
take this prose more seriously mayhap!
