I have an opportunity to buy a EOS D2000 for $600. Is this camera worth it? I have always used a Nikon and I know nothing about Canon cameras.

Thanks

It's basically the same camera as Kodak's DCS 520 which Phil reviewed here...

Keep in mind that the review was done almost three years ago.

At that time he called it the 'Jaguar of the digital photography world where all else are Fords'.

They sometimes go for about four times that $600 price on Ebay. I saw one in a local shop for US$4000.

Be sure and check it out very well.

Also, check out Rob's report in his now defunct Pixelcount issue from 1998...

OH my God that sounds scary, I don't know which is worse...

Having a camera likened to a Ford, or one that is wired by Lucas,
the King of Darkness.

I'll take the reliable one. Does this mean Phil had major electrical
problems with his review sample? ;)

Thanks for the links. I still haven't decided yet. One thing I don't grasp is why anyone would be willing to pay so much for a camera that only produces a 5.7mb file. The Olympus 2500L and the Nikon 950 produce bigger files. Do you have any idea why the camera's asking price is so high?

Thanks,
Francine

I think it's Lucas "The Prince of Darkness", I owned a Lotus Elan and had many British car owner friends.--Jeff Morris

Yup. I use to ride a Triumph motorbike and the "Prince of Darkness" was well known to us...

Anyway, isn't Jaguar now owned by Ford? :)

Because pixel count isn't everything. This camera can produce some wonderful images and I know pros that still use them.

As for usefulness to you - only you can decide that.

Francine, I just sold mine on eBay for 2100. Of course it had a couple of 1 gig microdrives and extra batteries and such....but it is a fabulous camera. Very fast. I never had a focusing problem. Almost every shot a winner. My only issue was weight and portability. I bought the D30 and it's the answer to my dreams (tho, sometimes I miss the speed.)

You might want to hold one for 5 minutes...

But I think 600 is cheep for such a great camera.

Good luck, Susan

Former owner MG-A, MG-Midget, MG-BGT, and many, many finely wrought Lucas accessories. They look like a million, and last for a month. I got it down to where I could swap a three pound, $130 fuel pump in 6 minutes flat.

Now I drive a Toyota pick-up, for three years now. Haven't had to buy anything. All it does is run. How boring. John

Francine,

This is a pro body. If you want to have a close relation camera to a film 35 mm slr, you definetly cannot beat that price. File size is small, but how big will you print your pictures? With all the interpolation software out there... Genuine Fractals, Stair Interpolation, etc... I'm sure you can print as big as an 8 x 10 with no problems at all. It is not a point and shoot. It is a camera that was built for a pro. It is big and heavy and if you don't have Canon lenses, you'll have to spend more money.

Good luck with your decision.

Francine,

Should you pass up on this, please tell me - am interested to buy it at this price.

Thanks.
