This is a candid portrait of my daughter done with the XT, 17-85 IS lens, and 420EX flash in a hotel room. It seems to me that the background color is to close to the color of the face. What do you think? Should I try to change it? I am not good at pp and extracting the hair seems discouraging...

ISO 400, 1/60 sec, f/5.6.

THAT IS AWSOME!!!

Can I ask you haw you created the background and how did you extracted the hair? I am pretty new at retouching and I am amazed what a pro can do. But I am willing to learn :-)

I created the background with these two programs:

http://www.digitalanarchy.com/backdrop/backdrop_main.html

http://www.digitalfilmtools.com/light/lightdown.php

As for the extraction I used Russell Brown's technique:

http://www.russellbrown.com/tips_tech.html

Tutorial is named Advanced Masking--Old Stuff Thats New

I followed that with a technique I use to help blend the hair with the new background. I made a PDF of the tutorial, you can download it here (left-click on the link and it will take you to the download page--once there scroll down to the bottom of the page to download)

Thank you very much. I will study the technique and try to apply it myself.
Did you also change the WB and contrast?

Left the background, used the lightness channel of LAB, adjusted with channel mixer, softened, masked sharpening, added a bit of color tone and a white vignette.

First of all: Thank you!!!

I've seen your PDF.
I don't have idea, how much time it needs create mask?
I think that I'm too slow :(

Recently I've bought a Graphire 4 Wacom tablet, i hope will be useful for this purpose!

Sorry for my english!

You might be right. Maybe it is time to recalibrate my monitor....

Thank you. It does look like a totaly different picture! What do you mean by color tone in a BW?

That is WILD. I have to say that I like it even though that isn't the look I had in my mind.
Thank you,
