To Canon: A Wishlist for Future DSLRs.

Would love if Canon would listen... but... Look at D1. Canon marches to the beat of its own drum. Sigh...
Not really it's own drum, the camera is not good for the same set of people that love the D30, but it is good for the people that loved the D2000.

I mean if I were in the market for another film camera I would marvel at the EOS-1V, and then buy the EOS-3 or another ELAN 7, or a used A2E, but I wouldn't be upset that the 1V existed. I just wouldn't figure it has any advantage over the EOS-3 for me. Well, none worth the extra cost. I'm not even sure the EOS-3 has enough over the ELAN...

  • ISO levels available in 1/2 and 1/3 stop steps
I want only 1/3-stop increments--no 1/2-stops for ISO. I could say this is for the sake of simplicity and more control is better but the reality is it would be just a little different math--easy to implement both ways to give the user their choice.

The real reason is there have been many cameras with 1/2-stop shutter speeds but not 1/2-stop ISO settings. ISO (or ASA if you go back that far) has always been 1/3-stops. If I got a camera and accidentally set the CF to 1/2-stop ISO and saw an ISO of 180 or 750 or something, my head would spontaneously explode. :-) So the real reason to not have 1/2-stop ISO is for personal safety. :-)

On a more serious note... On future cameras, in addition to user-selectable ambient metering patterns, why not give us user-selectable flash metering patterns?

Hello.

OK. Some of these have been "solved" on the 1D, but I would like to
see these features on Canon's next "entry-level" DSLR.

I'll start off with some no-brainers (let's keep this realistic
folks :) ):
  • Improved AF.
  • Indication of active focus point in view finder.
  • Dedicated FEL button.
  • Zoom in image proview.
  • Improved/decreased noise patterns in shadow areas at high ISO.

Here is installment #2 of the "wishlist summary page."
  • Improved AF (equivalent to 1D)
  • Indication of active focus point in view finder.
  • Dedicated FEL button.
  • Zoom in image review with higher mag and "freeform" zoom (no frames)
  • Improved high ISO performance
  • ISO levels available in 1/2 and 1/3 stop steps
  • Auto-rotate images taken in portrait mode- Backlit LCD on top
  • An eyepiece that sticks out the back of the camera a little with
a better eyecup
  • Discard the focus assist lamp or make it red
  • Simultaneous recording of JPG and RAW
  • Spot metering
  • New larger sensor composed of two D30 sensors stitched sideways
(30x22, 1.2x multiplier, 6.2MP) with no stitching artefacts (!!)
  • Electronic preview on a flip-swivel, preview-capable LCD usuable
during MLU with separate AF and metering from the CMOS
  • MLU in realtime (with LCD preview)
  • Push-on/Push-off DOF preview
  • Eye control focus
  • Weatherproof EOS 3 style body
  • Backlit illumination of the top LCD
  • Serial port to connect GPS
  • Voice recording
  • Same battery as D30
  • Dual CF slots
  • More CFn2 settings
  • Quick on/off of AEB
  • Easier access to USB port and CF card
  • Color and B&W modes
  • Easy way to either fill-flash or main-illumination (not flash EC)
  • Eyepiece shutter
  • Bigger buffer with faster flush
  • Integrated grip (room for larger LCD and more dedicated controls)
  • Realistic prices
  • User-selectable flash metering patterns (along with full disclosure in non-ambiguous terms of what those flash metering patterns are!)
  • Interchangeable focus screens
  • Software control to combine three AEB shots into one in-camera (or perhaps we should just use PhotoShop for this...)
  • ISO setting in the viewfinder
  • Upgradable imagers as a potential long term design consideration
Are there more?
