Basically it is just masking out the areas around the helical ribbon. I created the ribbon in Solid Edge, this a 3D modeling program we use at work for mechanical design. Since I do not know or if it is possible to create a helical ribbon in PS, I knew how in Solid Edge by using the helical protrusion tool and building it. Import that into PS and mask away.

Serrator - might take me a while to get used to the spiral effect but many of the other pic's on your web site are just Out Of .... well this world I think!!

Particularily love the lynx coming out the page - excellent work - and some of the bird pic's are extremely well done as well ;-)))

Couldn't get your tutorial link to take me anywhere and would love to better understand how to do this?
