I am noticing wide variation on RAW file size on D80. I have gotten out-of-camera files between 6.9MB to 10.3MB, a range of nearly 50%. On my D70, file sizes were between 4.8MB-6.1MB, a range of about 25%.

My RAW files modified in Capture NX range between 9.4MB-14.0MB. One file went from 7.8MB to 13.2MB after editing in NX. The The same set of edits in NX seems to produce very different proportional effects on file size for different files.

Any ideas?

I'll hazard a guess here. The more "simple" your images are, i.e., uniform backgrounds, uniform textures, etc. the more "compressible" the pictures are for the compressed raw format. Similarly, the more "complex" your images are, i.e., busy backgrounds, varied textures, etc. the less compressible. That should explain the range of file sizes you see. As you go higher in the sensor densities you will see larger range of sizes and therefore the 6 MP sensor gives you a smaller range of raw file sizes compared to the 10 MP sensor.

As I remember, the D50 was "12 bit compressed" raw format.

What does the D80 do?

I don't know why the file sizes would vary like that, but I have certainly noticed the effect of the larger file sizes. I like to shoot in RAW + jpeg and it's great that the D80 lets you do that with jpeg fine, not just basic as with the D50.

But between that and the extra MPs, I now only get 54 shots on my 1Gb card where it used to be way into three figures. I rarely had to think about it but now it is a real constraint. Going to have to research which larger SD cards work well with the D80, and pay out more cash.

Since I was upgrading from D70/CF cards, I needed to buy new SD. I had anticipated some increase in file size, and bought 2GB Lexar 133x as primary, with 2GB Kingston ElitePro as economy back-up, both with recent rebates. In RAW only mode on D80, each holds 162 shots. Lexar is working well and fast, haven't tested Kingston yet. Lexar came with bonus USB SD card reader, which was good for me, since I was coming from CF.
