Dear Sirs,

I have owned the C750 UZ for a couple of years and I want to replace it with a camera that is quicker (start up and taking the first picture), with a higher resolution (currently 4MP) and a tad more compact. 3 or 4x zoom will be fine for me.

I have tried the canon SD700 but the images are no where near as sharp as the C750.

Any recommendations greatly received.

Thanks for reading.

Hi Paul,

I too have owned a C-750 for well over two years now. Still use it! It is a terriffic little camera and the optics and build are excellent.

If you'd like something similar, but more up-to-date with more resolution and faster performance, then the newly announced SP-510 UZ sounds like just the ticket. I will be looking in to it probably just after xmas time. Here's the link:

I decided to retain my C-750UZ, and bought two h type 512 MB cards for it. At SHQ they improve the time lag between shots.

As a C-40 replacement I bought the Stylus 800 ast year. It works much faster than the C-750, but its low-light performance is more iffy due to the smaller lens aperture.

You might look at the Stylus 750, with 7 Megapixels and 5x zoom. It is smaller than the C-750UZ, and weather-resistant.

Pentax, Panasonic and Fuji might also be worth a look at. Check 'Cameras' (menu top left on this page).

Thanks guys for the prompt replies. The sp510 looks nice and I would expect it would make a great replacement but I really wanted something more compact (the reason I went for an SD700).

The Stylus 750 looks good also - Henry, are the images as sharp and as clear as the C750 in good light?

Maybe i'm asking too much for an ultra compact - what are your thoughts as I am pretty clueless on this sort of thing.

Paul, if you are happy with less zoom, I would reccommend the Fuji F11, if you can still get one or the F30.

I have an F11, its small well built and excellent image quality. I have blown F11 images to 12x16 with no problem at all

Having said that, I have a C770 UZ which I use and I have never found lack of resolution to be a problem.

This shot is a significant (and I mean significant crop):

Abid,

I've been so busy looking at the DSLRs that I didn't notice this one -- I hope it's better than the SP500 which Phil only reviews at "above average" -- but if it's really faster than the 750 (and my 770) maybe it's what I should be looking at, too, since the higher pixels and zoom are really attractive to me. Hmmmm, maybe the E-500 with 14-54 really isn't the right one for me. I'd love to see some photos from this sp510.

Thanks for turning my attention to it!

Hi Susan - yep, as you rightly said, the previous incarnation of this camera only got an "above average" from Phil and the main bones of contention were that it didn't have image stabilisation and not high enough resolution to face up to the competition.

The new SP-510 UZ at least features higher ISO. A few days a go there was a thread in here that showed a test picture at ISO 1600 - and though somewhat noisy (as expected) it wasn't THAT bad - it cleaned up fairly well in NeatImage. I expect the SP-510 to be faster in performance than our C7xx series - and of course, it has the capability to shoot RAW!

So then I think to myself I am already quite happy with my C-750 - if ONLY it was a little faster in focussing, had higher ISO and could shoot RAW. Well, the SP-510 has all of that, plus higher resolution. So its well worth considering....but as yet, its too early to see any extensive reviews. We'll keep eyes/ears open...

Hi Abid,

I've been sitting on the proverbial fence for so long now -- I've got a trip to the US next month, in which case I'll go to NY and probably buy the e-500, but now I'm looking at this little 510 and thinking, hmmmm, it's got the zoom I like, no changing lenses, the higher # of pixels (means I can enlarge photos to A4 and above, plus the website guy who wants to show my pictures needs 6mp+), plus I could learn about shooting in RAW, plus what else? so if the resolution is as good or better than my 770, (THAT"S THE REAL BIG CONCERN)and if it's FASTER!! maybe I shouldn't be in such a hurry to join the DSLR gang yet --

I was even thinking this morning about the 8080 but hearing how slow it is just turns me off -- I've got enough of that frustration with the 770. That's my main gripe as you know.

WEll,, maybe I'll stroll by the camera store on my way to a doctor's appt. this afternoon. This one I'd consider buying here since it's not so expensive -- the e-500 with 14-54 is about $600 higher here than in NY.

Is it fair to ask you a "what would you do" in my shoes question?

Best,
Susan

Hi Susan... I think you should take a look also to the news coming Fujis (9600 / 6500fd), the top in my list now is the e500, but I'll wait the reviews and if any of them, including the sp510, has a fast focus in low light preferably without needing a focus assist, it could make change my mind.

That's my break deal now, fast focus in lowlight.

Good luck in your trip... choose the best for you. ;-)

The Stylus 750 is not out yet. But it has nearly the same resolution as my Stylus 800, which gives more detail than my C-750UZ in good conditions.

The Stylus 750 is a splashproof P&S camera, therefore is not a straight substitute for your C-750UZ.

There are situations where I need the 10x zoom and the faster lens of the C-750UZ. The firmware upgrade for pictbridge and the new H type xD cards make it work faster, too. And I have the FL-40 external flash and the B-300 tele converter.

There are other situations where I prefer the near-instant operation of the Stylus 800, particularly on rainy days. It has 640x480 movie resolution, which allows tolerable reproduction on the DVDs I can now make on this Toshiba M60 laptop.
