70-300mm DO IS vs IS non-DO

It shoots out to quite a long length when you zoom it - no good for stealth photography as people start staring at it right away. IMHO a high quality P&S is better for stealth and will have better lens quality, sadly. This lens performs very poorly stopped down to f16+, is very prone to flare and produces ghost images, which can be mistaken for bad bokeh, which it also has. Of the 20+ non-kit lenses I own from Nikon, Canon, and Pentax this one is easily the worst quality. I suspect that it has a halo effect with purchasers because of its high price. If you want to quickly see just how bad this lens is, shoot photos of the moon with it and compare them to another telephoto zoom.

Actually you don't even have to take the photos, you can tell through the viewfinder it's that noticable.

Well, it is called a screw-in rubber hood. You have to get the 58mm size to fit the filter thread of the lens. Several companies make it, such as Hama. It is shorter than the metal hood supplied with the lens and is just as wide as the lens itself. It can be folded back for storage without taking it off. Here is a picture to show you what it looks like.

you are absolutely right. But we are just talking, after all, but I'll be polite. Point taken.

The fact that here the truth about the DO still did not appear (yet).

Canon makes the lens for phpotographers who don't want to be noticed, regardless of the quality of the pictures:

that may include the following categories:
paparazzi
stalkers

regular folks shooting at somebody else's girl across the street (acting like they are shooting something else)
events where the white ones are only allowed to press pass holders

that sort of thing...

for that Canon do ask for a little higher contribution (compared to the other one which produces the same quality but a little longer).

That's all.

I recently shot a Senior Baseball tripleheader at Safeco Field in Seattle with the non-DO version of the lens.

It's not the fastest lens, or the sharpest lens, or the lens with the most beautiful color and bokeh. But it got the job done at a price I could (barely) afford - I do not usually need a lens this long, but I had to get one for this event, and I'm happy enough with what it offers that I think I'm going to keep it. Even though I also have a 70-200f/4 that I like a lot - the extra 100mm makes a difference, and it's interesting to try IS - though the fact that it takes a couple of seconds for the IS to "lock in" partially defeats the purpose for shooting action.

Overall, I would rate this a great lens for the money and I would use it for sports again. If I sell enough pictures from these games, though, I may buy a 100-400 f/4L.

Here are links to a couple of galleries - these are cropped and post-processed.

it's a bittersweet symphony, this life

Trying to make ends meet
You're a slave to money then you die

I'll take you down the only road I've ever been down
You know the one that takes you to the places
where all the veins meet yeah

No change, I can't change
I can't change, I can't change
But I'm here in my mind
I am here in my mind
But I'm a million different people
from one day to the next
I can't change my mind
No, no, no, no, no, no, no,no,no,no,no,no(fading away)

Well I never pray
But tonight I'm on my knees yeah
I need to hear some sounds that recognize the pain in me, yeah
I let the melody shine, let it cleanse my mind, I feel free now
But the airways are clean and there's nobody singing to me now

No change, I can't change
I can't change, I can't change
But I'm here in my mind
I am here in my mind
And I'm a million different people
from one day to the next
I can't change my mind
No, no, no, no, no, no, no
I can't change
I can't change it

'Cause it's a bittersweet symphony, this life
Trying to make ends meet
Trying to find some money then you die
I'll take you down the only road I've ever been down
You know the one that takes you to the places
where all the veins meet yeah

You know I can't change, I can't change
I can't change, I can't change
But I'm here in my mind
I am here in my mind
And I'm a million different people
from one day to the next
I can't change my mind
No, no, no, no, no

I can't change my mind
no, no, no, no, no,
I can't change
Can't change my body,
no, no, no

I'll take you down the only road I've ever been down
I'll take you down the only road I've ever been down
Been down
Ever been down
Ever been down
Ever been down
Ever been down
That you've ever been down
That you've ever been down

you mean trackings? no, it's not as fast as the 100-400. not as fast as the f/4 or the push-pull mentioned.
It's also kind of noisy (the AF I mean).

Chasing cars will give a pretty low percentage of keepers, for example. Chasing kids will get a little better, maybe.

asking me to re-read... hmmm , that wasn't polite (wasn't it?)

think of me as a fellow poster and ...

But you too try to be polite.

So after this we'll see 2 polite posters, markle and bill: both won't ask others to re-read anything.

Fair enough?

Especially liked 2630.JPG and 2724.JPG.

The latter image (linked below) simply rocks, in many respects. The caracter, the background (makes the ball so prominent), the framing and, above all, the "decisive monent" caught exceptionally well. Impressed.

meaning a bad thing only when I talk about something you don't like: if I said that the DO is a spectacular lens you probably would've changed "excitement" with something else.

that's normal, and understandable in the fan world.

now what do we have here? 70-200 f/4 IS and the DO. same price, different needs (incognito for the second one, quality for the first one).

simple like that. why you guys can't see it like it is?

mah...

Well, I didn't buy the DO to shoot the moon, but when I first got it I tried it out anyway.

I was very satisfied with the results.

As for bokeh and sharpness, I don't find it a problem.

And ultimately, I'm very happy with it for what I bought it for. A compact zoom lens with IS, USM and FTM.

not as good as the previous one but good enough.

am I supposed to sing it?

regarding the fading away passage: the no no no no repeated thing:

was that in any way related to the DO being (any) better than the non-DO?

why some enjoy being obnoxious. Must be some deep
seated > inadequacies.
I am confused on that one as well. I don't understand the motivation or the unnecessarily rude attitude. He seems to be on some kind of mission to bad mouth the 70-300 DO lens. While he is doing that, I think I will go take some pictures with mine. I have had it for a year or so and love it.

After having considered the various comments here, I went to my local shop to check out the non-DO lense. I liked what I saw, but not their price (I did spend some money there to make it worth their while - stuff I needed anyways). The lense I saw seemed of reasonably good quality - much better than I expected from the comments here. I felt it was reasonably light and I would carry it with me often (having rented the 70-200mm f/2.8 IS last week, I know it wouldn't have been the case). I know that it may not be as crisp as the L-series 70-200's, but it's at least as crisp as the DO, if not more (per the MTF charts).

So... All that to say that I pulled the trigger on one at Badger. The staff there (Jeff) has been amazingly responsive and I also bought an EF-S 10-22mm.
