When setting high speed sync on the 420EX, how high can the shutter speed can be set to in XT? Thanks.

FP high speed sync works at all shutter speeds, through the XT's fastest 1/4000.

I have the 430EX which I believe operates the same as the 420but with higher power.

In manual and tv mode wityh high speed sync you can go up to the highest shutter speed of 4000. In av you appear limited to 200 by using the custom function.

A shutter speed of over 1/200th will not make any difference, i.e. you will not be able to freeze motion more than you would at the camera's max x-sync speed.

Not true. 1/4000 with FP high speed sync will freeze motion in the same way 1/4000 will in ambient light.

Actually it is the shutter speed that freezes action. At 1/4000 second you are capturing that length of time. A flash is only illumination for your subject that happens to be on during that time. It could actually flash for 1/200th of a second (probably does), but the camera will only record 1/4000th of a second somewhere within the flash's 1/200th.

You're right that at max x-sync, the duration of the flash is shorter than 1/4000, and will therefore freeze motion better than using high-speed sync. But that wasn't the question. The question was about the highest shutter speed that can be set using high-speed sync mode.

all the way up to the highest

in conclusion I leave you with the words of a famous pro

football player , who said : ' It's not the way you play the game , it's the way you BET that counts ' .

you can disable custom function

With E-TTL and a compatible body (like the XT) you can exceed the
max x-sync at the cost of lower flash output. But it's the flash
burst that freezes action, not the shutter speed.

You may want to take a look at this article:

Good article, but the statement "flash burst freezes action, not shutter speed" only applies to "slow sync" flash, with shutter speeds equal to the x-sync and slower. For FP high speed sync, it is the fast shutter speed that freezes motion.
