I am travelling in China at the moment and am considering stopping off in Hong-Kong to pick up a 5D + 24-105mm. I am British and we pay a lot for cameras in the UK, and I was hoping to save a good amount by buying from there.

Can anyone tell me what the going rate for the kit is in Hong-Kong? I am also wondering whether I would be able to get international warranty on the camera or the lens, or whether it would be a Hong-Kong only warranty. If I can't get international warranty it might be better for me to wait till I get back and buy from one of those companies on eBay (e.g. DigitalRev) who sells from Hong-Kong, and will pay for equipment to be transported back if service is required. Buying from them would cost $4200.

Any thoughts much appreciated!

Matthew.

Buying from them would cost $4200.
As you live in the UK, ordering from any EU-contry would give you the same warranty as buying home. Even from Germany, you could order this kit from app. 2.900 Euro and you would have right to the actual 300€ cash back.

Could you please suggest two or three reputable dealers in Germany or anywhere else in the EU zone who are doing the 5D+24-105L kit for 2900 euro? If the price with cashback is 2600 euro, then at today's exchange rate, it comes to £1766.30. The best price I am seeing in the UK is £2130 with cashback. If your price is correct, the saving of £364 amounts to just over 17%!! That would be serious interest to UK buyers.

hi, i live in hk, and would suggest a reputable shop called "Miramar" in Stanley Street in the Central District on Hong Kong Island. Going price should be: 5D: a little less than HK$20,000; 24-105: about HK$9500. however, if you are buying the 2 together, you may be able to bargain a little bit off. all the Canon goods i have bought from there are genuine and have international warranty.

happy shopping!!
Dave

Definately worth a lookif you are stopping off in HK anyway, might not be such a good idea if you have to pay extra to go..............don't go anywhere apart from Mong Kok (a district in Kowloon, it's camera heaven!) Avoid all small independant shops in Tsim Tsa Tsui (they WILL rip you off!)

Places to go in Mong Kok are:

Man Shing Camera, G/F, Shop 66, Sai Yeung Choi Street South, Mong Kok, Kowloon, Hong Kong, Tel 00852 2396-2996

Wing Shing Camera, G/F, Shop 66, Sai Yeung Choi Street South, Mong Kok, Kowloon, Hong Kong, Tel 00852 2396-6886

This is where the locals go! so its definately a good deal, try and go with a local if you can (one who speaks English if possible) and ask for a discount! HAGGLE HAGGLE HAGGLE!!! even if they give you 5% off or a free memory card.

I was in HK three days ago so the prices of what you was looking for are

Canon 5D: HKD 20,160 (GBP 1440)
24-105: HKD 8,925 (GBP 637.50)

I think Warehouse Express are doing a special deal for the two for £2139 but this is with a Canon rebate of £200 (which takes an age to claim). For these two pieces of kit, you won't necessarily save that much. I was looking at the 70-200 f2.8 IS and can save £380 of the best price in UK.

Man Shing Camera's details are corrected to

Man Shing Camera, G/F, Shop 106, Tung Choi Street, Mong Kok, Kowloon, Hong Kong, Tel 00852 2396-2296

Thanks very much for your replies everyone! It sounds to me like I won't really save anything buying the kit in HK, and it sure is an expensive place to visit. I might have to go there anyway to extend my Chinese visa though. As I'm not considering any other major lens purchases (except for a 50mm f/1.4 and 17-40mm ahem) I think I might wait till I'm back in blighty.

hetedik are you sure about the EU2900 price? If so it would be cool if you could tell us where you saw it.

Thanks again!!! :)

Sorry Matthew,

I have just come home from weekend. Here you have a link to the largest German price-waching-robot, where I have searched for your kit.

http://www2.preissuchmaschine.de/psm2_frontend/main.asp?produkt=375932

Unfortunately I don't know the first two shops (the cheapest :-) I checked the pages of the cheapest one, "computerquelle", they don't have it on stock. The second shop looks to be in Austria, but they have it. The third shop, RedCoon, has been around for years, they are OK.

Don't hesitate to ask, if you have difficulties to get through the German grammar ;-)

Hi -

Don't know where you are in China, but the 5d is readily available in Shanghai, and the last price I got seemed pretty competitive with the best US prices. I recently got a 22,000 RMB price quote from a dealer in tai ping yang shu ma guang chang on Zhang Yang Lu in SH. Remember, that's "VAT" included (i.e. there is no tax on top of that price). That's $2800 US or so.

Have no idea about the 24-105 lens, but generally Canon lenses are also readily availble (including L lenses) at reasonable prices.

a) You wil not have warranty on th e5D (I know: I've bought cameras in HK). Lenses are covered though.

b) You will pay just a tad more than you would pay in the US - but less than you would pay in the UK

have fun!

Times square (in causeway bay) has one good camera shop on the HiFi/Audio floor (7). Do look there. I;ve bought lenses, flashes etc there.

Also look for 5D at Windsor House, camera shop on ground floor. Ditto, reliable and good selection.
