My five week old S30 pooped out last night. I shot a few images and turned off the camera. Then about five minutes later, I wanted to take some more and slid open the lens cover.

Nothing.

The battery couldn't have been dead, but I recharged anyway. Still nothing.

Thoughts on what it might be before I call Canon and send it away for who knows how long?

I would check out the battery terminals to make sure they haven't accumulated anything that is preventing them from making contact. I assume that the lense is not extending and that the camera is totally dead even though the battery is fully charged?

Well, i'm assuming that when you slide the cover over, that it triggers a switch inside. Maybe that is corroded or broken?

Try moving (and holding) the power/reply button to the right and see if it powers up in display mode.

If you have not used this feature, you can view pictures taken on the camera w/o opening the lens cover. You simply move the power/reply lever to the right and hold it until it turns on, it only takes a couple seconds. If you are not surf what the power/reply lever is, it is the lever you use to switch from display mode and ready to take pictures mode (sorry, my descriptions).--Brian Miller

The situation is as Jerry expected, that when I slide the lens cover over, the lens doesn't extend, nothing happens at all, even with a fully charged battery.

Brian, your suggestion was a good one. I get power in display mode, but when I slide the lens cover, nothing happens with the lens. Then if I switch back to shooting mode, I'm without power at all.

Time to call Canon...bummer.

I don't like the door, either. Sometimes when I switch from shooting to display mode, the fingers on the door side move it just a hair, which is enough to power the camera down.

The Canon website says that if there's power in one mode and not in another, that the camera needs to be sent in for repair. I fear for how long it might be until I see it again. Due to bad weather, the office where they take customer service calls was closed today, so I'll find something out on Friday.
I had an Olympus digital with a sliding door. It failed and it was
the door. That was the main problem I saw with the S30. But, I
bought it anyway.

After being told by Canon that I'd have to send the camera back to their service center where they claim a 2 to 3 week turnaround, I solved my problem, at least for now.

It's been cold in my house and I decided to hold the camera in my hands for a few minutes and warm it up. Then I slid the door open and it works again!

I this keeps up.
