I am thrilled that the 50mm now has a modern L class available.
Aside from the heavy duty construction, weather sealing, and all that,
Does anyone know about the performance differences between the 1.4 & 1.2L?
Specifically sharpenss & color fringing?

because the 1.2L isn't out yet and since it's a new construction (from what I understand) it's probably not a good idea to go by the old one which I seem to remember wasn't too good (as opposed to the 85/1.2L which is an excellent lens).

Hopefully the 50/1.2L will be as good or better than teh 85/1.2L. IF it is, they have a winner and if not, it's doubtful people are going to pay that for the lens.

I wouldn't!

EVEN if I could afford it, I would never pay for a lens thats not as good as the 50/1.4 (for instance) just to have bragging rights and that f stop difference isn't all that big.

HOWEVER! I LOVE THE FORM FACTOR so to speak. I LOVE that short, stocky lens with the huge front element (ala the 85/1.2L) so if the 50 behaves anything like the 85, I WOULD buy it.

No one knows anything because the f/1.2 isn't out yet. Canon's discontinued 50/1.0L was fairly poor given its extremely high price tag, so hopefully Canon has learned a thing or two and the f/1.2 won't disappoint. But we won't know for sure for a few weeks.

I had a chance to use 50L F1 - and it stunk! Now - there is a definite thrill of holding an F1 lens in your hands and being able to take a picture with only one candle light on, BUT so does my 35L. Don't know if I'd trade my 35L for 50L though.

As for the sharpness - how can you ask about sharpness if the product is not even out :) If there are some lucky people who might have their hands of those lense - the lenses are pre-production samples and will not likely reflect the final product. You just have to wait. Frankly - 50 1.4 is an amazing lens and considering the price - it's a jem, soo - spending $1,300 more just for one F-stop???

It's not even 1 f stop...

I guess I was partly right. No real tests yet but since I was lusting for it, I am glad you showed me the link.

My point stands till we get some tests I assume.

I'm looking forward to it :)

...according to Michael Reichmann who used the lens briefly, anyway.

I would be very surprised if it isn't anything other than a superb performer though. The 1.0L kinda sucked optically in some ways; the fact that they made it a 1.2 bodes well -- that half-stop can make all the difference.

I'm still not getting one. I want small, compact, high-quality primes with less extravagant specs, and I don't want to encourage Canon. :-)
