Hello all - I just wanted to say that since this is my first post on this board.

Now, this may seem a bit redundant, and I have been reading through messages for a week or 2 now on this forum, and the Canon forum trying to get a feel for how happy everyone is with either the DiMage 7 or the G2. I find that users for either camera are very pleased with their purchase. I am just having an extremely hard time trying to decide between the 2 cameras.

A week or two ago, I was pretty much set on the DiMage 7, due to the 7x zoom lens, and the fact it has another megapixel on the G2. But, I started reading into the G2 and liked the idea of the significant battery life advantage over the DiMage 7 (so it seems anyway). I have a Canon ZR10 MiniDV Camcorder, and I think it uses the same exact battery, so the battery interchangeability would be great as well. The only battery comparisons I have seen have been on this site in a few different reviews (such as the DiMage review). I was disappointed to see the DiMage 5 and DiMage 7 rank the lowest. The plus side to the DiMage 7 (and 5) is that it uses standard AA batteries, so finding power when you run out isn’t a big deal.

Both seem to do very well in regards to image quality, and I was very impressed with all of the sample images I saw from various people. The only issue I had with the DiMage 7 is the non-standard color space… not that it is a BIG deal to run the images through the conversion program, but it just kind of turned me off. Although, yesterday I read some older posts regarding settings on the camera that people have adjusted to take the conversion step out of the equation. If someone could give me a thumbs up on that, and maybe a few small experiences, that would shed a bit of hope on the DiMage 7.

So, I figured I’d see what kind of responses I would get out of the 2 forums (sorry for the cross post). Due to the price similarities, I am still leaning toward the DiMage 7 because the fantastic zoom capabilities, and the 5 megapixel resolution.

So, if anyone has anything to share either way, I would GREATLY appreciate it. I have been reading posts for a few weeks now monitoring peoples praises and complaints for both cameras. Anyway, thanks for anyone’s and everyone’s time.

Use the search feature at the top of the screen to filter out good data for yourself. Also, (I assume you already did) read the reviews of these two cameras on this site.

It usually comes down to personal preference anyway... never mind much what others say, try them both out in the store.

I had the D7 for 4 months, now I use the G2. Why? The D7 is a great camera - if You have time, a lot of time to check all the settings, each time before You press the shutter release. I often had unpredictable results. I had to convert each picture into another color space - too much trouble any some good shots missed. Now I use the G2 - no more trouble, OK have to admit the autofocus sometimes isn't perfect, but the colors are, the sharpness is as good as the D7's and the battery works much longer - but If You need the Zoom... I didn't.

Hi Dustin,

just three small hints:

1. the Dimage isn't image stabilized, so shooting at full zoom needs a veeery "shure hand" or superb lighting
2. the Dimage has a very high noise level in it's images :-(
3. the G2's LCD is a great viewfinder, for example for overhead shots

I would re-read the reviews here and at http://www.steves-digicams.com and compare image quality again - the Dimage is the looser regarding this.

I'm in the same corner as you right now. I currently shoot with a Canon Elan IIe and almost exclusively slide film. For me image quality is most important.

I too am turned off by the need to run DiMage7(5) images through DIVU.

With the G2 I could keep/use my 420ex flash.

I went to the store and handled the D7 and the G2 and I have to admit there are allot of external controls on that D7 that I'm sure would take time to master. The wrinkle with a steep learning curve is technology turn-around. You have to ask yourself how long you plan to keep a D7 if you bought it today. I would think one would want to turn his/her equipment every year (2 max) to get maximum selling value and to stay current with technology. I would think you want to factor this into the equation.

I don't know what your skill level is and I am by no stretch of the imagination a pro shooter otherwise I would be looking at a digital SLR. But I do think I'm an advanced amateur so I could learn and handle the D7 in time I'm sure. It all depends what type of pictures you plan to take and who your audiance is. I take pictures to hopefully enlarge a rare one and hang it on my wall to admire (and others to of course).

What I don't like about the G2 is it's size which to me is too small. I have faily large hands and I like the heafty grip of the D7.

The Long and The Short Of It...

I'm still undecided. For me I think I plan to wait for Canon to come out with an improved Pro90 style camera. This surely must be in the works to compete with Minolta and Nikon and the 5mp level of camera. I prefer Canon because I shoot Canon now and I like what they create and I like how they support their product.

I don't know why but we humans sure spend an inordinate amount of time researching a camera purchase yet I can go out and buy a new truck in an afternoon with no more thought then drinking a beer. Wonder why that is??? Good luck with your decision.

Yeah, I have used the search feature extensively over the past couple of weeks, just to try and read as much as I could about sepcifics with each of the cameras.

I also like hearing first hand experiences and what people like or dislike about their camera. It is not a cheap purchase, and I want to make sure I've made the right decision. I read both reviews, on this site, and any other site I could find.

I just need to find a store that has both models on display with fully charged batteries (or at least enought juice for me to play around with them) :-)

Thanks for the input Kurt, I do appreciate it.

Ahh, just the kind of experience I was looking for.

That is good to know - I had pretty much figured the G2 would give me "easier" results, which is why the decision is so hard. I want something that is going to give me outstanding images, something that is fairly intuitive, and also allows for good manual control over what is being captured. The D7 seems to allow for a TON of control, but has a few issues - as does the G2 I'm sure.

For the most part, I had heard the AutoFocus on the G2 was pretty good... but I did gather that there were some problems with the D7's AutoFocus. Now, this could have been fixed with the latest firmware update, but I'm not sure.

As far as battery life, that is one of the largest plusses for me that the G2 has over the D7. I'll probably end up purchasing a second battery if I go with the G2 to make sure I have enough for a day away from an outlet for charging.

Anyway, thank you very much for your input... this is making the decision easier.

Chris,

I didn't notice as much noise in the D7's images as you make it seem, but I will definitely go back and check them out. I have read the reviews over at Steve's Digicams 2 or 3 times each, examining sample shots and his pro's and con's... and I have done the same thing on this site.

From what I could tell, based off of a couple of reviews, and user experiences (from these forums), the G2's autofocus is better. I could be wrong, but that seems to be what I've heard.

Anyway, I do appreicate the input. Thanks!

Rehi!
I didn't notice as much noise in the D7's images as you make it

You can see it nicely in blue sky areas.
From what I could tell, based off of a couple of reviews, and user

I think, the G2 with it's AF-light might be much better in low light focus.

At least I'm not the only one agonizing over this. :-) (here's my long response)
I'm in the same corner as you right now. I currently shoot with a
Canon Elan IIe and almost exclusively slide film. For me image
quality is most important.

I too am turned off by the need to run DiMage7(5) images through DIVU.
This for me isn't a HUGE problem, but it isn't something I really want to have to deal with. If I had to deal with it, I would...

This will be my 2nd digital camera - but I have used 3 or 4 models extensively, and mastered them to the point where I feel comfortable making most manual adjustments. I bought a Kodak DC200 (1megapixel, no optical zoom) way back, and used it, but I didn't use it a ton. It eventually sat unused completely, and now doesn't even work properly. My problem with it was the image quality. At the time it seemed good, but not really good enough for great prints.

At work, we have 2 Kodak DC260s that we use for taking pictures of parts, so the sales people can email them to customers (I work for an airline parts broker in the IT dept). The Kodaks, while almost 2megapixels, produce great imatges, and are TOUGH cameras. We've taken 1000's of pictures with them, and they still work great. They really don't have a TON of manual controls, but work well for point and shoot for the sales people.

I also purchased a Nikon CoolPix 990 for the company when it came out, and learned that all the way through. I really like it, and have gotten accustomed to all aspects of the camera. The images it produces are outstanding, and I like the swivel body.

For years, my mom, who is a REALLY GOOD amateur photographer (I'd say, on the border of being pro - she shoots weddings and family portraits with her large format cameras often) has never been interested in the digital end of photography. She didn't like the idea of not having a negative. Well, since then, my dad and her got a Coolpix 880, and a laptop (for road viewing), and an Epson Photo 780 inkjet (after I showed them the results of my printer). She takes that camera EVERYWHER she goes now, along with her laptop, and prints a ton of pictures for fiends an family. She won't leave home without her 880 and laptop. The images look absolutely stunning when printed on the Epson Photo 780.

I've also helped friends and neighbors figure out their digital cameras, most of the time they get one too complicated for their learning curve.. but oh well.

(sorry for the long part there)
I went to the store and handled the D7 and the G2 and I have to
admit there are allot of external controls on that D7 that I'm sure
would take time to master. The wrinkle with a steep learning curve
is technology turn-around. You have to ask yourself how long you
plan to keep a D7 if you bought it today. I would think one would
want to turn his/her equipment every year (2 max) to get maximum
selling value and to stay current with technology. I would think
you want to factor this into the equation.
For what I plan on doing - using MY Epson Photo 780 printer to print up to 8x10 shots. Really, a 3 megapixel camera would do the trick just fine, but being a tech geek like I am, I want to have something close to top of the line. Granted, 4 megapixels isn't top of the line, but it would be more than enough for my printing needs. I plan on burning every image to CD, regardless of if I really wanted to keep it or not (unless it is just a bad image, such as blurry or too dark for adjsuting). CDs are so cheap, there is no reason to get rid of images to spare space.
I don't know what your skill level is and I am by no stretch of the
imagination a pro shooter otherwise I would be looking at a digital
SLR. But I do think I'm an advanced amateur so I could learn and
handle the D7 in time I'm sure. It all depends what type of
pictures you plan to take and who your audiance is. I take
pictures to hopefully enlarge a rare one and hang it on my wall to
admire (and others to of course).
I've been wanting to devote more "hobby" time to photography, and also make use of my printer. The heads get clogged so often because I rarely use it - due to the lack of photos to print. As far as being a pro shooter, I am not going to consider myself a pro. Learning the technology is the easy part for me, so the D7's greater learning curve isn't an issue for me.
What I don't like about the G2 is it's size which to me is too
small. I have faily large hands and I like the heafty grip of the
D7.
I don't mind small, but the one thing I really like about the D7 (even know it makes it a larger camera) is the optical zoom lens. 7x would be great, but 3x should suffice - my mom gets great shots with her Nikon 880 with 2.5x optical zoom.
I don't know why but we humans sure spend an inordinate amount of
time researching a camera purchase yet I can go out and buy a new
truck in an afternoon with no more thought then drinking a beer.
Wonder why that is??? Good luck with your decision.
You make a great point here... for me, I am in no huge rush to run out and buy a camera, so I figured I'd do the research first, and get one I felt was the best for me. Well, between these two, I have no idea which one is the best. I don't want to spend the money on a PRO level camera ($1000+ or maybe $2000+), and these 2 cameras have the features and quality for what I want to spend ($600 - $800). I guess I'll keep reading, and talking to people, and also try and find a store with both models for comparison first-hand.

Thank you very much for your response... I appreciate it.

Hi there,

FYI, I've post up a web site that comments on both DiMage 7 and G2. If you're interested to check it out, it is http://digital.chungtong.com/d7/

I've just sold the G2 for a D7 but now I regret!

Running the images from D7 thru DIVU is slow. After you've loaded them all with color match you have to save them as well! The saving process is very slow.. maybe I only have a P3-450 512MB RAM which is not juicy enough.

The D7 images are more noisy. G2 produces accurate color with low noise at ISO 100. I like G2's color better too. The D7 is not hard to learn, at all. It is just a matter of the control. You just have to know what they mean because they are not intuitive enough. However, there weren't many features and it won't take you long time to learn.

The best thing about D7 is its 7X zoom, 49 mm thread and on top flash. Its flex focus and manual focus is good too. However, the image shown on the LCD is a turn off since it doesn't show the actual colour (becuz it is not run through the DIVU yet). It looks awkward.

So if the zoom isn't important and you're not going to add filters, get a G2 definitely. Otherwise, D7 is still good for its price and features.

I know that the Pro 90 is getting on but did you consider it at the start.
What may have put you off the 90.
I'm curious as I'm deciding over G2 & Pro 90.
The zoom is something that Ilike but the MP issue has me on hold.

Hello all - I just wanted to say that since this is my first post
on this board.

Now, this may seem a bit redundant, and I have been reading through
messages for a week or 2 now on this forum, and the Canon forum
trying to get a feel for how happy everyone is with either the
DiMage 7 or the G2. I find that users for either camera are very
pleased with their purchase. I am just having an extremely hard
time trying to decide between the 2 cameras.

A week or two ago, I was pretty much set on the DiMage 7, due to
the 7x zoom lens, and the fact it has another megapixel on the G2.
But, I started reading into the G2 and liked the idea of the
significant battery life advantage over the DiMage 7 (so it seems
anyway). I have a Canon ZR10 MiniDV Camcorder, and I think it uses
the same exact battery, so the battery interchangeability would be
great as well. The only battery comparisons I have seen have been
on this site in a few different reviews (such as the DiMage
review). I was disappointed to see the DiMage 5 and DiMage 7 rank
the lowest. The plus side to the DiMage 7 (and 5) is that it uses
standard AA batteries, so finding power when you run out isn’t a
big deal.

Both seem to do very well in regards to image quality, and I was
very impressed with all of the sample images I saw from various
people. The only issue I had with the DiMage 7 is the non-standard
color space… not that it is a BIG deal to run the images through
the conversion program, but it just kind of turned me off.
Although, yesterday I read some older posts regarding settings on
the camera that people have adjusted to take the conversion step
out of the equation. If someone could give me a thumbs up on that,
and maybe a few small experiences, that would shed a bit of hope on
the DiMage 7.

So, I figured I’d see what kind of responses I would get out of the
2 forums (sorry for the cross post). Due to the price
similarities, I am still leaning toward the DiMage 7 because the
fantastic zoom capabilities, and the 5 megapixel resolution.

So, if anyone has anything to share either way, I would GREATLY
appreciate it. I have been reading posts for a few weeks now
monitoring peoples praises and complaints for both cameras.
Anyway, thanks for anyone’s and everyone’s time.

I recently bought a Dimage 5 and returned it and bought a G2. Dimage 5 is real similar to 7 only lower resolution. I tell you battery life sucked@!@@

The first set of batteries it shipped with lasted 15 shots! The rechargeables I could get maybe 25-30. The quality of the the 2 cameras is no comparision. In all aspects the g2 is built better. I also liked the 7x zoom factor...but you can get optional lenses with the g2 2x zoom...+. and not for the Dimage. I get around 200+ pics with std. lithium battery with g2 and pics are superb!

Read the reviews....cannon is rated higher in all reviews I've read...usually #1 in higher res reviews.

If i was you, i would be looking at the G2 or the Sony 707. Look at landscape pictures or pictures of the sky with the D7. I was very excited about this camera and it's features but i could not get past the noise. At this time, i do not think it is a better camera under $1,000 that is better than the G2 or 707. Maybe soon, it will be a camera with a big zoom and have raw, low noise, etc and almost as a conbination of these two cameras. The reviews rate the G2 very highly and i do not see many negatives with this camera at all. Before spending this much money, why not go try the two cameras out side by side, plus have some 8x10's made of pictures you take, while trying these cameras out. I believe you will like what you see in the G2 but again, you won't have the zoom you were looking for.

I tried both ( I have a G2) and where I work we sell the Minolta too....and in Canada, it would cost about the same thing for : 1 year of batteries for DIMAGE7....or a new G2 camera :)

For whatever is worth, I had an Oly 4040 for a week and sent back when the LCD died, then I bought the G2, quality is MUCH better on the G2, all over, I don't know about the quality of the Dimage 7, I heard good comments , saw some comparisons of pictures taken with both cameras, I still like better what I saw from the G2. the color rendering of the Dimage did not look natural, although they were very vivid.

I would not buy the DiMage 7 unless I absolutely positively without a doubt needed 7x zoom. Other than that I liked the G2 much better. How often are you REALLY going to shoot at 7x? The 5 MP resolution is somewhat moot..

You will absolutely be astounded at the battery life of the Canon G2. I did not think it was possible to get so much use out of a digicam with the LCD ON!

The G2 is the better camera. The Dimage has the 7x. Which is more important?

I hope I didn't include 67 lines of previous responses in my reply.

I labored over this same decision for weeks. The D7 gallery on this forum blew me away, and, quite frankly, I liked the images better than the G2's.

I read many minuses about the D7 including battery life, plethora of knobs, color space, which turned me off. (AA batteries ? forget it.. they'll last about 10 minutes.) I'm no pro, and surely did not want to go to school with something as difficult as the D7. I wanted a point and shoot if I needed it. The G2 is definitely that, and I seem to do better with that than making settings myself.

After one month of ownership of the G2, I'm still wrestling with focus, and "jpegging clouds." You know those annoying splotches you get from blue skies .. ? Can't seem to get rid of that.

Good luck !

Annoying splotches from blue skies? I do not get that at all. If you have any examples I'd like to have a look.

I seriously considered the F707 before purchasing the G2, which i am more than happy with . it's a fantastic camera. the biggest flaw of the 707 which i really couldn't get over was it's proprietary, EXPENSIVE and limited capacity memorystick card format. that's a MAJOR problem with the sony. memorystick really bites (okay apart from the "time remaining" feature, sweeeet). oh yeah, plus the G2 was $350 USD cheaper here in australia! :)

the g2 is a great camera. with the tiffen megaplus 2x, i've got 6x optical zoom. with the 0.75x converter, i can go from 25mm thru to 204mm- 8x total zoom range (admittedly with changing lenses, but apart from spontaneous situations it's not a problem)
