..in the original post, which I personally find simply rude and ignorant,

this is a useful document. thank you for posting it.

haven't read it in detail yet, and I am certain there will be points on which philosophy differs, but good basic workflow and thoughts.

Cheers,
Scotty

if you do not know how to take good wedding pics, you won't be in business very long. the word will get out to the public domain that you are not very good, and you simply will not get many customers.

a lot of wedding photography is referrals from happy clients and reputation, and after a few inferior jobs that will be the end of your photographic business.

This is one of the funniest and most informative wedding guides I have ever read. I have never photographed a wedding, but I have videotaped a bunch.....which is much easier than still photography, although some of the same principles apply. I could never do what you do. I simply could not take the pressure of knowing I might screw up a once in a lifetime event. I have worked with a number of pro photographers at weddings, and believe me, they earn every dime they make. My hat is off to you and your fellow professionals.

in your original post, the link you provided immediately began downloading the document, with no confirmation dialog box available to the user. this is simply rude and incosiderate behavior towards any potential visitors to your site. no matter how good the document, you lose the trust of viewers and leave them wondering if they have been exposed to malicious content.

Hope this clears up your question.

What do you say to the beginners with Easy $$$ in their eyes?
I'd simply say, "Consider the risks"

I admire anyone willing to go into a one-time situation having SO much stress and emotional baggage surrounding it! Not for me. :)

Thanks for posting this guide.

It's well written, funny and informative. I've never done a wedding nor have any intention of doing it - thankfully b/c I have come to appreciate just how difficult and "risky" it is). It's great to have your insider's viewpoint. In fact, your advice, though aimed at weddings, does inform on events/parties in general. As a guest, I tend to make an effort to get a few good shots to give back to the hosts and several of your comments/advice will be helpful in the future or ring true from past experience.

Thanks again,
-Alex

PDF is a superior output format for printing as the creator has control over the layout. I find that many HTML pages with in-line graphics do not always print all the graphics omitting those that fall on what would be page breaks.

Just like Flash is pretty much a standard these days, so is PDF for this kind of document. Just install the FREE Reader.

Thanks for all the kind comments, glad you enjoyed the guide. I did my first wedding because my dad voluteered me. I shot in auto and most shots came out OK with minor editing, however...all of the key shots, the ones most likely to be selected for large prints, could not be saved. These shots had large areas of white or white next to black, or reflections in the background. All of the things guarenteed to fool the metering system and the flash.

It took a couple more for me to figure out what was going on. To further complicate things, my 1st wedding was with an ELAN, next, a Pro90, then a G3 and a D30, then a 10D and now a 20D. (I like a challenge). Shooting business and private events helped me a lot. Like Alex mentioned, they are close to what you encounter at receptions. It's fun for me to read others experiences. I'm one of those who has to learn by correcting my own mistakes. Anyone want to know 8 things you should never do while refinishing wooden floors?
