Thank You!

Let your hands and eyes decide, undouptly the D80 will feel of better build quality. Then look though the viewfinder and you will see a big difference between Nikon D80 large Penta-Prism with Magnification approx. 0.94x (from the D200) versus the Canon Penta-Mirror with Magnification: 0.8x.

Build quality and viewfinder performance are important things.... but to me the thing that is most important is which camera & lens lineup give me the best resulting images.

The comparison is 400d + $$$ to D80 - $200, looking at Amazon. For the same price as the D80, you can get a 20D instead. Or a 400d and almost a 35 f/2.

So many choices...

Wait for the reviews and the price, you'll know then. Either way you'll be able to take great photos.

Surprisingly, IIRC the same Canon shots, Nikon high ISO looks even better. It seems to me, that the most valuable advantage of Canon is gone now ...

D80 looks really tempting - feature wise it completly kills 400D, and Canon should shake their head, and stop limiting even their entry level bodies with stupid limitations of features, which are normal with competition ...

10mp with medicore noise perf @ high ISO
vs 8mp with great noise perf & high ISO
(Low light capability)

3 fps vs 5 fps.
(Sports/Action capability)

Nice consumer grade vs
Prosumer/semipro

Plastic body vs Mag body
(Durability)

Hmmm.

The only clear "advantage is the 10mp. AF benifit is TBD, how implemented

If you can't take good picts with 8mp, 10mp won't make it happen.

They are both good cameras, not in the same market or league.

Cheers

Dan

When you ask a queston like yours you drag every Nikonian out of every

hole and crevice on DPReview Forums trying to tell us how much better Nikon is than Canon.
Personally I never post on Nikon Forum even though I think Canon wins
handsdown in nearly every category over Nikon.
That said get the new 400D and you will be happy with it.

Could not agree more ...

And at different price points.

The 400D wins on portablity, for it's (effective according to LL) dust control, and upgrade path clear through to FF if you want to keep your options open.
The D80 wins in the VF, AF point arrangement and selectablity.

If you go for the Nikon option, don't forget that you may want to buy the Nikon software, which is bundled free with the Canon, further increasing the price differential.
The Sony A100 and the Pentax models are also worth a look.

A lot depends on what sort of shooter you are - judging by your question that you have not entered the world of photography as yet, the 400D is a very reasonable place to start, and will do you equally well if you want to take the hobby further and develop your skills or if you just pull the camera out for casual and occassional use.

Now go to the 20D review.
Plastic body vs Mag body
(Durability)
Are they not both plastic.

Kobus
No. See data in Phil's specsheets

Quoted from page 3 of d80 review.:

"Nobody quite does a quality plastic body like Nikon, it feels
tight and solid, wrapped around a good metal chassis."

..of the fairly inexpensve cameras around at the moment, I would probably go for the 20D - at the prices you can get it for now, it's a steal.

I think at least I'll wait for Phil's review to see if the old problems of NR smoothing the images is really gone.

Really, that's interesting ....

Let's see if Canon is able to sell any copies of this their new baby as D80 is sooo much better.

Like seems Nikon is doing as well.
