S3 + AutoISO + NeatImage

Hi,

I don't use AutoISO very much, but from time to time I try the Scene/Creative modes, which implies AutoISO as well. When I try to filter the pictures with NeatImage, the program can't find the ISO info, because EXIF data doesn't show it, just "AUTO". Is there any way to avoid this issue, other than try using 100, 200, 400 or 800 presettings in NeatImage?
Regards,
Jose

The latest version fo Neat Image (v5.5), at least the demo, reads the ISO value from the new Canon P&S cameras, even when the photo was taken with the Auto or Auto High ISO mode.

Since that data isn't even recorded in the EXIF (as far as we know), how can it read it?

Are you sure it's not just estimating it from the image?

The data is recorded, just not where it is supposed to be.
If it is, tell me where it is. All I know about is this location:

ISO data is recorded there (encoded) but in auto or high-auto, all it records is that you are in auto (14) or high-auto (15) IIRC.

I have found no other locations in the EXIF in which the actual ISO of the image is recorded when the image was shot in either auto mode. Simon confirmed that this is not recorded at all. If it is, that would be news to me.

Thanks for the replies.

So, there is no way to get the ISO used when in Auto, and the only approach in Neat Image (and I assume in any other noise reduction tool) is guess and try, right?

As far as I know, that is correct.

If someone could send me images (phil at owl.phy.queensu.ca) shot in Auto and HighAuto mode, I'll take a look and see if I can see anywhere the ISO is stored. There is a LOT of information in these images that is still unknown.

I believe many of these fall into those categories.

It's not clear which images were shot in Auto & High Auto in that gallery. I've sent Phil three examples (Auto, High Auto and 80) from a different thread.

After I hit the "Send" button, I realized that they may be too big to make it through the email system.

Will reshoot at a lower resolution to get smaller files and try again.

Right. It appears that Neat Image can determine the actual ISO which the camera selected when the Auto and AutoHi settings were used. That's encouraging since it would seem to indicate that the information exists in some form.

I noticed that ZoomBrowser shows the Auto or High Iso Auto settings, but not the actual ISO that the camera used.

Thanks for the samples. It is true, the reported ISO is wrong in the Auto and Auto-High settings (always reports 100). There are a couple of interesting unknown values, but I can't correlate either of them with the ISO's that I calculate for the images across the different samples.

Below is the information I get from the images. Pictures IMG_0535.jpg - IMG_0541.jpg and IMG_7005.jpg - IMG_7007.jpg are two series that (I'm assuming) were shot under the same lighting conditions.

I've added decoding of the "Auto High" setting. The 0x0001 information is interesting, but unfortunately is 0 for one of the Auto shots, so I don't think this can give us what we want. 0x0003 seems to vary depending on the ISO, but is different under different lighting conditions, so couldn't be decoded to ISO per se.

So at first look, I can't see a place where the ISO is stored in Auto or AutoHigh mode. :(

What software reports 138 for the ISO? (And where does it get this value?) The value is 100 for ISO and "Auto" for CameraISO as extracted by ExifTool.

Neat Image displays that value, but I have no idea where it gets it or whether it is a correct value. ZoomBrowser shows it as Auto.

Sorry for 'abusing' the thread but let me quickly jump in here to tell Phil that I doscovered exiftool a week ago ( http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/readflat.asp?forum=1010&thread=19690234 ) and that this thing is just a miracle - lovin' it although I am not a Perl programmer at all...

Unfortunately after the initial success I also discovered (or other people around here pointed it out to me...) that AutoISO == ISO 100, bummer. I forgot to check Zoombrowser during the weekend on AutoISO images, has anybody tried Canon's solution? If so, does it display the ISO for AutoISO images (I seem to remember yes, but mightbe wrong...)?

Cheers and thumbs up tho Phil,
Dembo
