Anybody thinking of jumping ship?

gotta love the people who buys SLRs for it's kit lens.... LOL!
Olympus users? ;)
hate Pentax cus I have to use 4 AA batteries. Yikes!
Before the advent of Eneloop batteries, this is a serious problem. No joke. NiMH batteries just drain themselves like crazy.

Oh, you do not know what poor jpeg and slow AF in low light is until you start using the DS. These seriously affect the way you shoot. That's why I sold my Pentax DS.

I will definitely recommend the D80 over the 400D unless the high ISO quality of the 400D manages to trounce the former. But between the D200 and 30D, I will advise my friends to get the 30D.

I was one that moved from Nikon > Canon and dont get me wrong I have no intent to move back to nikon but I for one am a little dissapointed in Canon as of late
everyone talks about the upgrade path with canon being 18 months NOT

I would more call those updates not upgrades we are still waiting the same amount of time as the nikon folks for true upgrades

I dont consider the 350D > 400D 20D > 30D upgrades but more of an update

so for the true upgrade to my 20D I will still be waiting another 12-14 months

the upgrade to my 300D the 400D is here but since I have the 20D what is the point
2 extra mpix and a bigger LCD NOT

I guess the Canon 18 month upgrade cycle myth has finally been busted
you have to admit that the D100 > D200 was a significant upgrade

but it was still over 3 years 18month + 18 months = 3 years as well for Canon for true model upgrades

so I guess if you have lots of money to blow you could get your canon updates every 18months but for me I guess I will be skipping at least one if not two models

so I can truely get an upgraded camera and not just an updated model with a different name

The more things chagne the mroe they stay the same

It is interesting to see Ken Rockwell angry with Nikon. Its like someone in the Nikon forum said earlier, Nikon always seems surprised when anyone wants to buy there cameras.

I would like a lower priced 30d. That would be cool. But I would have prefered a somewhat higher priced somewhat better featured 400d. The 30d has all the features I want, but (even though its only 2mp) I know myself to well. I want the extra resolution one way or the other. The 400D does look like a nice upgrade in many respects, bigger LCD, somewhat improved grip, 10.1 MP. The dust removal sounds cool.

It probably doesn't make sense for Canon to add more features than it has. But its irritating as this cam gives me almost everything I want.... but not quite. I hate to switch to Nikon, because despite what some may think I prefer Canon. Ive only owned Canons. I hauled my film Rebel all around London and Paris, and got some great pics which I cherish (some of which are being used by at my old college for promotional materials).

Canon is the industry leader for a good reason. Im sure the 400d will be very successfull. Im just not certain if Ill be satisfied. Its a shame pdreview got shafted. There previews and reviews are always extremely helpfull.

I totally agree with you.

20D upgrade is in 1 to 2 years not before.
20D > 5D is an upgrade

30D is only good to someone starting with noting or come from a 300D (and it's a small upgrade but signifiant).

the 400D is an update to 350D, which in turn was an update to the 300D. The 30D, likewise, is an update of the 20D model. Nobody has ever said anything else. They're just modernizing the different segments as time passes.

The up_grade_ to the nnnD is whatever nnD model is the current one. The upgrade to an nnD model is a nD model (with the discontinuity of not having an APS sensor-sized nD model available at this point).

If you feel the rate of improvement has slowed then you're absolutely right - but that's not the fault of Canon; they and all other manufacturers have picked the low-hanging fruit, performance-wise by now. They're bumping into some much more fundamental limits on sensor performance, size-weight-power restrictions than they experienced earlier.

That said, I'm considering getting a Pentax instead of or in addition to my current 350D - not because of camera bodies (though I'm intensely impressed with the K100), but because of lens availability. Canon is fairly weak on wide-angle lenses compared to other manufacturers, especially if you want primes. And the direction they've been taking on lenses for the past year or two is disconcerting to me, with all energy seemingly spent on the very high-end, at nosebleed prices permanently out of my league. This is a hobby for me, not a business, and I can't motivate paying upwards of $1000 for any lens, no matter how good it is.

What irritates me is what they took away.

The monochrome settings window. I use that. A lot. I can't read the LCD in sunlight, so it doesn't matter how big it is or what is on it.

The 350 / 400 has a small viewfinder, but that is gonna be the ONLY way to tell what the settings are in daylight. Probably a pain on a tripod

What else did you want in an upgrade/updage of the Rebel line?

You get more MP, you get a much better AF, you get a better buffer depth, ultra sonic anti dust, software dust removal, 100k shutter, picture styles(ok that ones kind of weak).

Thats a lot of improvements for an upgrade/update especially since it is coming in $100 cheaper than the intial price on the XT.

Some people actually LIKE the size and ergonomics of the XT. I know it might shock some people but not everyone hates it. I admit the D50 or 20D's grips are better but the XT does not bother me very much.

A spot meter would be nice but partial metering works well enough that its very rare where a spot would make a huge difference. And lets be honest canon needs something to make the 30D/5D etc... series interesting, durablity and better ergonomics arent always enough.

..$1100 to 1200 now - pay a few extra bucks and get what you want. You won't notice much extra in 25% smaller pixels going from 8 to 10 MP.

nikons are 1 stop noisier than the 20/30D/XT Canon owns high image quality and low high iso noise.

That is exactly why Canon still don't offer features like AutoISO, Spot Metering and Wireless Flash. Nikon's approach is more about continually give you more without regard to stepping into there other camera lines. Take for Example with the intial D70 was similar in Features and design as the D100, then the D80 which in many ways very simialr to the D200. Nikon was not worried about offering the D50 as a cheaper alternative to the D70s.
