--I have the 300mm F4 IS...love it. It is light in weight, sharp as a tack, hand holdable for great sports shots. Also awesome with the 1.4X extender. FredMiranda.com...reviews. Canon Primes..read on. Much sharper, and lighter than any zoom in that catagory. With the Canon 100-400...not sharp, slow, heavy and push pull!!! Maybe Canon will soon make a 100-300 F4 IS!!! Perfect lens.

if canon makes a 100-400mm f/4 IS be prepared to shell out over $4000usd .... it won't be cheap!

if anything, they'll leave it as is and just upgrade the IS. everyone who uses it for animal photography rants and raves about the push/pull system being faster to zoom with than the twist system. canon will probably leave it a push / pull system.

i anticipate a totally new lens; something like the nikon 200-500mm IS but it won't be a fixed f/4. if so.. another $4000 please.. this lens would compliment nicely with the 70-200mm's.

just another opinion.

Not a good combination.

The best is probably a used Sigma 70-200/2.8 with a 1.4x teleconverter.

The Canon 70-200/2.8 is better but more expensive.

If you can go for a prime, the 300/4L IS is good but a 200/2.8L + 1.4x TC is cheaper and more flexible, though lacks IS.

I've no hands-on experience with it, but tests and reviews give it good marks.

Sigma 100-300 f4 is fast and zoom :)) It works well with 1.4 TC. But if you want superior IQ and fast AF, you should look at primes. (200 2.8 + 1.4 TC, 300 f4 IS, 300 f4 IS + 1.4 TC and 400 f5.6) You can use their images even with %100 crop !!!

I haven't used one myself, but it's been getting pretty good reviews and it's certainly small in comparison to som of the others

I have an EF 300mm F4L IS and find it much easier to use than the 100-400mm Zoom. I borrowed a zoom prior to buying the 300mm to try it out and I’m glad I did. The 300mm prime with IS is easy to handhold and get great shots. The built-in hood is also nice you never forget where you left it. I also use a 1.4X teleconverter with the 300mm and the results are very good. I use the 300mm with a 20D and 30D.

If you need a > 300mm zoom in that price range the Bigma and 100-400 are two choices. If you don't need a zoom two excellent choices are:
300 F4 (with or without IS)
Pros:
  • F4
  • MFD = 5 feet (good for full body shots of large insects)
Cons:
  • Not at sharp with the 1.4 TC as the 400 F5.6, especially wide open
  • Not as much reach
400 F5.6
Pros:
  • More reach
  • MUCH sharper bare than 300 F4 + 1.4 TC
  • Sharper with 1.4 TC + more reach
  • Better for birds due to reach + faster focusing
Cons:
  • F5.6
  • MFD is 12 feet or so? Fixable with tubes.
If you need length: 400 F5.6
If you need F4: 300 F4

If you need both start saving up for a 500 F4 ;) I am happy with the 300 F4 IS for now.
