Ahh, Venice!!

Venice was everything I thought it would be and more. The city is so full of life.

The best advice we got was to put the map away and get lost. And we did. There's a unique aspect to Venice that you actually see more if you allow yourselves to wander than if you plan your every step.

The Future Mrs. & I spent the whole day in Venice and were exhausted by day's end. But we did a lot including, go up the bell tower (San Marco's Campanile), watch Murano glass making, learn about Venitian lace, visit a few churches, shop for souvenirs, take a Gondola ride & eat dinner with live music. Oh, and along the way we took a few photos too =)

I could have spent 3 weeks in Venice shooting the city. I had so many photo ideas that I felt sad that I didn't have more time to capture the essence of the city. But I guess that also will get filed under the "Things to Do Next Time" list.

I have 19 photos from Venice in my gallery here:

Its so hard to pick only a few sample photos, so I encourage you to visit my gallery where there are more images. As always, I appreciate your comments either here or on Pbase itself.

Here's a few samples of Venice:

My better half and I have a two week vacation planned for Italy next year and will be spending a day in Venice. I think we would be wise to try and spend a night too but don't think the schedule will allow it. I'm sure she will love these pictures too!

The waiting is the hardest part . . .

Brian.

Beautiful, Al. You've captures the essence of the city. Next April my wife and I are taking my daughter and her husband on a package tour of Italy. You are making it more difficult to wait.

Just a couple quick comments...

Looked at your pbase galleries...

1.) Looks like your 28-70 was one of your favorite lenses.

2.) You just cost me a bunch more money. You have convinced me that 16mm is not wide enough and that I need a 10mm.

Great galleries. Look forward to more.

Nice photos, Al.

You spent only one day there? That makes me feel a bit better. I am hoping to get there next month, but may have only a day to spend in Venice.

Joe

Venice is a photographers delight. For a real treat, go there in early winter (hopefully not one of the high water years) and walk around when the streets are empty, the light is different and the place has an ethereal feel unlike anywhere else. If you're lucky enough to be there when/if it snows, it's pretty amazing.

Thanks for showing your pictures. Really enjoyed them.

You can do a lot in one day in Venice and if possible ride the
gondolia as the view point is fantastic :)

Tony
Tony's right. You can do an awful lot in Venice in one day. However I suggest doing the gondola ride later in the day. For one the sun isn't beating down on you while on the gondola. Second sitting on the gondola is a relaxing activity so its best to time this for when you'll be a bit tired and need a break anyways. And if you can manage it, try to find a restaurant on a canal or in a nice open square. They may be a bit more money but the views are fantasic and you will always remember eating there.

Yup. My most used lens and for good reason. Its really hard to argue with the results.

I'm afraid I'm having that affect on people. I believe I may have caused Mark Dimo to get a 10-17 & Lance seems to be eyeing one with some real intensity. At least its small and won't add more size to your collection. =)
Great galleries. Look forward to more.
Thanks. I have a couple more cities left to go.

Wonderful shots. Especially the third one.

That one makes you curious whats behind the corner (where the boat is)

Any chance you would be willing to e-mail me a full resolution version of your "Dinner in Venice" image? Any format would be okay, as long as it is full-res. Even low quality JPEG, (to save size). It looks like a good candidate to run through Photoshop de-fishing. There are some nice buildings on the right side and the umbrella stand on the left side. I'd lke to see how it an image would look de-fished.

Very nice, Al, #3 stands out for me. I must get round to visiting Venice sooner or later, I guess I don't have many excuses, living in Italy. The last time I visited Venice I was using my first camera, a Kodak Brownie-E 620...
OT, I like your watermark: can you tell me which software you use?

Al,

yes, I meant the signature on the photos you post here. Didn't realise it was so simple.
Thanks for the info

Sounds good, although I'll probably forget by then since we won't be going until October 2007! Anyway, we look forward to Italy like we've never looked forward to a vacation before.

Simply can't wait . . .

Brian.

Very nice images alinla. AAAhh!...romantic Venice! I would have thought that the romanticism of the undies hanging out there drying might have inspired you both to marry there & then :-> Ha!

The last pic really captures the cultural vibe & the spirituality of the place imo.
Thanks for sharing
