I posted a similar message yesterday in the open forum, and now thought I would ask here as well. I have decided, based on my needs, that I want a 3 megapixel compact camera. The S30 seems like the perfect camera. The sample images i have seen are great, and any reviews I have found have been good as well. The other cameras which seem like competition for it though are the Oly C-3040, Nikon 995, And Minolta DiMage 5.

Now..since this is a Canon group .. I will pose my question in this way ...

Can anyone comment on why the S30 is better than the others I mentioned?

Any S30 owners out there who have tried these other cameras? I really like the S30 alot..but I want to make sure i get the best camera.

My #1 priority is Image quality. 2nd is feature, 3rd is size.

Any info or insight would be appreciated. Thanks!

Dan

Check the reviews and sample images on this site; when you consider image quality, features and size all together, I think the S30 is a clear winner (I think it is at or near the top for each of these individual criteria, too). Very happy with mine. Available for around $500, price does not detract from its appeal either.

Glad to hear you are happy with your S30. Unfortunately I cant find any images or reviews of the S30 on this site (only the S40) but I have seen them on other sites and was very impressed. In fact ..the S30 images on imaging-resource.com look much better than the S40 pics..which kinda surprised me.

Dan,

I would suggest that you go handel the cameras you are looking at, I had an s30 in my hands and did not care for the feel. Enough bigger than my s100 that I wouldn't want it in my shirt pocket and not large enough to have the feel of the 3040z or 995. If you are looking at 3040z or 995 you should also look at the G2 there are alot of people that really like it.

Wow! Tough question, Dan... I'm haven't used all of those cameras, but I have looked at most of them, but I'll give you my opinion anyways! (FWIW!)...

I ordered an S30 yesterday after much comparison. The cameras you mentioned were on my list as well as the G1, G2, Nikon 885 and Minolta S304. I really liked the G2, but I couldn't spend that much money! I ruled out the 885 after looking at the sample pics around the web and the fact that I'd have to spend an additional $60 - $80 for a rechargable battery and charger. I also ruled out the 995 bacause it just didn't feel right in my hands (not to mention the price, for me). The rotating lens is a nice feature, but it made the camrea more difficult for me to hold.

I ruled out the Oly because the controls weren't intuitive to me. It took me a while to figure out how to work the zoom for some reason. Since my entire family will be using the camera, the controls have to be intuitive, and the S30 was much better in that regard.

So, my final choice was between the Minolta 5 and 304 and the S30. I like the looks of both Minoltas, but the Dimage 5 is bigger than I wanted, so I ruled that out. The S304 has a 4:1 zoom, which would have been nice, but what finally tipped me to the S30 was the fact that I couldn't find an S304 to play with! Plus, in the images I've seen, the S30 images look better to me...

Did that help?

Ron. Thanks so much for the reply, and yes it did help. Sound like you are in the exact same boat as me .. as I am considering tons of different cameras. Every day I change my mind:) But the S30 keeps sticking .. and I really like it. The biggest thing for me has been that the pictures I have seen online look amazing. I like the 985/995 but the S30 pics look better to me. Even better than the 995 (even the 995 has some chromatic abbreviation, and the 885 has tons).

But like you did, I think I will go handle all of these cameras...as I have only handled a couple oif them. Perhaps that will make my decision easier.

Thanks.

About returning your camera...let me just ask you this. i have handled both, but own neither. Do you see anything wrong with it? If you didn't have this forum, would you even be questioning anything on the camera? does it do what you want? If you noticed the extra noise or not sharp images out of the box, then maybe you need to seriously think about taking it back, but otherwise....do you really think its going to matter? if the differences are so miniscule that we have to sit here and argue about them.....maybe they are null and void? NOW, that said...anyone wanna tell me which to buy? ;) actuallyi have my own selection down to the olympus d40z, canon s40/30. i want the canon, but am worried about the no lcd on top and the battery pack. I also like the olympus but am worried that it uses smartmedia and that it has no protective layer on the back LCD. I also don't like the layout on the back....but the AA battery use....why couldn't they have just made 1 camera out of the two and made me happy?

You thought this as well??? I thought maybe I was seeing things, as I preferred the images of the S30 over the S40 too! Funny!!!

i was in the market a short while ago and the s30 was the one, mostly because of size.

one thing i did not like about the nikon is the slow startup time (i think the review on this site mentions this).

get a 2nd battery and at least 256mb storage (128 are not quite enough), looks like ridata is a good and fast one (the 128mb sandisk i have is ok for about 800k per picture - 3MP fine, above that it's to slow, at least for me)
