...any words or rumorville about Canon announcements? Does anyone believe the 5D will drop in price if an announcement is made? Hoping to see the 5D price come down a bit...would like to get my hands on one soon:)

...any words or rumorville about Canon announcements?
Rumors abound and I have no inside knowledge, but...

1DsIIn (22MP)
370D (replaces the 350XT)
50/1.2L
Some supertele zoom like 100-400/4L, 200-500/5.6 or something
Some sort of gigantic sensor camera, new format, combined mount, somthing...

Over the past few years, the rumors leading up to the big show events tend to be spot on. Within the weeks prior, the disparate rumors converge to a generally agreed rumor. Usually the people with no posting history end up being the leaks in retrospect. I'm sure Canon does this intentionally to generate attention and buzz.

This time, the rumor generally supports the notion of at least one very high end 1D series body or perhaps something even more significant like a medium format.

It's so hard cometition that they always break the news in good time before the big consumershows.
Cebit, ces, photocina.... have no big news anymore

I think a 1D* (or something similar) is very likely, they had one of those at Photokina 2002 and 2004.

I stopped at a local dealer to look at point & shoots and was told that a replacement for the the entry level dslr body was being announced.
sounds like speculation to me.

It's hard to orchestrate an announcement event at a major trade show. You don't have absolute control over the environment and there are a lot of distractions to preoccupy the people you would like to influence.

By announcing just prior to the trade show, you have more control over the message and content. And, if what you announce is interesting, you can get people to flock to your booth at the tradshow to see your new products and to have informational meetings with your engineering/marketing guys. That's what Canon (and everyone else) would consider a win -- being the must-see booth at the show.

If Photokina is next month, why is Canon talking on 8/24? I'm
confused.

Canon's history has two threads for fall announcements. In 2002 and 2004 they announced 1Ds models the week before Photokina. The recent history has been to use Photokina for their high end professional announcements.

For the last three years, Canon has announced a DSLR model in August. The models announced in August have been the 300D, the 20D, the 5D, and the 1D Mark IIN. The reason for making announcements in August is that it fits well into a schedule for rolling the cameras out in time for the Christmas buying season. Canon's August announcements happen every year whether or not there is Photokina and have no special association with any show.

If Canon holds true to form, on 8/24/2006 we will see an announcement for a camera to compete with the A100 and the D80. It will be either an upgrade to the 350D or perhaps a new model that will coexist with the 350D. There well may be some lens announcements on 8/24 as well that are likely to be one or more lenses that will work well with the new camera.

Canon's recent history has been to make its Photokina associated announcements the week before Photokina. So we can expect those at the end of September. Some claim to know that a new 1Ds will not happen. But Canon's reputation for technology leadership is going to suffer if they don't have an announcement for Photokina that demonstrates it.

Just to keep everyone's hopes up.... http://www.northlight-images.co.uk/Canon_1DS_MkIII.html

All these rumors get started and people start believing them. Then when the announcements aren't up to expectations they get Pi* ed at Canon for not delivering. Then talk starts about how Nikon is now clearly ahead in the "Big Race". The thing is, it's a leapfrog race for Canon and Nikon, and that is a good thing for the consumer.

The way I look at it is my camera is going to be taking the same quality shots after any announcements. I wish Canon could come up with a good program to upgrade the eyes looking through the viewfinder...:)

That was when two high-level Canon-Spain executives announced in February 2005 that there would be a new camera between the 20D and the 1D Mk II.

Then in August of 2005, a spec sheet for the 5D--in Spanish--was leaked a week prior to the offcial announcement.

I would not put it past Canon to sometimes designate a particular national subsidiary as an "official leaker" or at least have the right to make the first official announcement.

Now, I notice that it was the Canon-Mid-East rep who first confirmed at th last Photokina that Canon had a high-speed, 24x36mm sensor camera in the works. And it was the Canon-Mid-East office a couple of weeks ago that posted the a tantilizing "new legend" banner.

If another "rumor" comes out of Canon-Mid-East, I'd pay attention to it.

No. Canon always has "left" the old model on their website lineup for a few months but it has been out of production for months. The 20D should be taken off the website soon. Canon simplifies production and doesn't produce a new and old model at the same time - do you think Ford of Toyota make 2006 and 2007 cars at the same time? :)

And I've just noticed that the "new" label is now off the 30D on Canon's website, and I know it was there over the weekend.

Guesses, guesses and guesses.

I feel confident enough to say that a 1dIII won't be released yet. Talk from Canon insiders a couple months back indicated they were having problems producing larger mp sensors. There is also talk that we may well see a 1DsIIn getting the bigger screen, picture styles, and quite possibly digic III (as that could bel be ready to go) but I doubt it - I can't see Canon thinking people who would buy this camera upgrading from a 1dsII, when they'd know a 1dsIII is on the horizon. So my guess is no new 1 series yet. Though we might get a paper announcement.

I think the 'Every Legend has a begining' notion refers to the photographer, not the camera, and it's refering to a new intro level camera. Possibly combined with the 'X' rumour, that it's a 10mp Rebel XTi.

A 50 f1.2L seems a very good bet.

And an upgraded tele seems like a good bet too.

At the very begining, I found photography simple: Point the camera and push the button. After several weeks of practice, I discovered I could achieve even better results by turning the camera on and removing the lens cap.

Well, I typed in the ISBN number for this supposed leaked book about the Rebel XTI...and it still comes up on Chapters.ca...(no book pic though)

Magic Lanterns, due out Feb 2007...

The text from the publisher reads as follows:

"Canon's newest digital camera is going to be hot, hot, hot! It's high quality, reasonably priced, lightweight, and constructed to feel comfortable in the hand. And the many avid amateurs snatching up this great equipment will want to understand how to get the most of every one of its state-of-the-art features, from its superb resolution to its super-fast speed. This "Magic Lantern Guide" has the answer to all their questions, because it explains in detail how to use all the wonderful enhancements: its ability to save large and fine resolution images direct to the CompactFlash Card, its user-selectable metering; and its single plate, high sensitivity, high resolution color CMOS imaging sensor technology."

Sounds like a Rebel replacement to me...10mpx and maybe 5fps?

So why release this book in February if the new Rebel comes out this Thursday?

I think maybe it is a 1Ds replacement now and a Rebel replacement in Feb?

Although....marketing wize it would make more sense to release a new flagship during the 20year anniversary of EOS...dontcha think?

I am not sure how reliable the book teasers are. When there was a lot of buzz about the D80, the book teaser (I forgot which book series) had specs that were quite off the mark. They are probably just placemarkers or TBDs or wishlists/speculation that accidentally get printed on the web IMHO.
