Do you just need to waterproof it or actually submerge it fully?

I've used an Aquatica housing with my old Fuji S2.

I think there's only a couple of manufacturers that make them for the 1D - Subal more do (expensive) and I think there's another manufacturer but the name escapes me.

Thanks Paul,

The Aquatic is only suitable for the Rebel otherwise too small.

The client wants some inwater shots if I can find out how much the housing will cost.

If you'r not going very deep and dont need to use strobes, then the EWA marina "bag" type housings might be a cheap alternative - a few hundred dollars or so.

Otherwise the Subal's are lots of $$$$, especially once you've added a port etc as well.

Sea & Sea and a company called Zillion also do 1D housings. The Zillion is approx $5,000 without ports.

I think its no point to put such a high end camera into a EMA.

For serious choice:
Subal, Seacam, UK german is your choice.

You may find most of the housing available here:

Thanks,

Lot's of expensive options although as this will be a low budget shoot I can't see them stretching to several thousand $ and I don't have the need for a fulltime housing.

The ewa-marine - U-AXP Underwater housing may be a viable alternative, has anyone used this before?

I have used an EWA bag for my film Nikon's. My 1Ds doesn't fit, so I'm only using it with my A80 for fun nowadays. The A80 has an accessoiry holder for filters and wide and teleconvertors which is 52 mm, and fits the EWA port. The bag itself is quite old, and I have repaired it myself with the same glue I use for my inflateble boat, and it is still fine. When diving the problem is that it really wants to float, and if I put some wheight in it, as soon as it's under water and the air is getting compressed it becomes heavy. I think an underwaterhousing is much easier in this respect. On the other hand, whith the EWA you can press and turn every button right through the bag itself, which is handy. I haven't taken it as deep as EWA claims it can go, and I allways feel a bit unsecure whith it, but it really has never given me any issues. If it leeks, you'll notice soon enough. Not by the flooding of the bag, but by air leeking out first. For the kind of work you describe, I can sincerely recommend it. It's absolutely waterproof, and you're not going to put a lot of pressure on it. And it's easy to bring, not as bulky as an underwaterhousing, and it's relatively cheap.

you should go to Phills review of the original 1D He hosed it down pretty good. even shows a picture of it all wet. the thing has like 90 different seals. I will admit salt water has more potential for damage, but you could probably rinse it off with fresh water if it got serious salt water on it.
