I purchased a 128MB Scandisk smartmedia card yesterday and formatted the card in my C-2100UZ. There was never an indication that the card had problems. I could review all the pictures and I was happy with the number of pictures I could save on the card.

When I decided to download the pictures to my computer, I received a surprise. I used my Memorex USB Smartmedia reader and the result was an astonishing message that the card needed to be formatted. It would not read any of the data on the card and kept asking me if i wanted to format the card. Our of pure frustration, I finally attempted to reformat the card. It started to format and then abruptly stopped; it failed. I went up on this forum and read how you should run a scan disk on the card. I tried that, but the computer indicated that the card was not formatted and stopped.

I placed the card back in the camera and received the card error message the the card needed to be formatted. I reformatted the card, took some pictures and tried to down load them to my computer with the same results.

Do I have a bad card? I can still review the pictures I just took with my camera but can't down load them. I put another smartmedia card in my reader and it worked fine. Images were on the card and could be downloaded.

Any suggestions before I head back to the store?

Sorry folks, that a sandisk not scandisk. I just read the other meessage about reformatting in your camera. I have reformatted in the camera numerous times but I still cannot get my reader to recognize the card. It still stes that it need to be formatted.

Check the sandisk site for updated drivers. Expecially if your using anything other than 96, 98, or 98SE.

Max,

Thanks for the information. I checked the updates, I may be mistaken but aren't they for a sandisk reader? I have a Memorex and am trying to use a 128Mb Sandisk smartmedia card. I have a CompUSA card and the original 8MB card that came with the camera. Both of them work fine in the camera and reader. I'm new to digital and still learning.

The suggestion to look for an upgrade of your memorex reader drivers is the correct one.

Contrary to the Compact flash format, the Smartmedia cards do not have a "controller" built in the card, so the card driver needs to know how to handle the different sizes of the cards. Many old cameras and readers can't read or write SM cards bigger than 8Mb or 16Mb. Some cameras can be upgraded to recognize bigger capacities, some not. Most probably your reader can't handle the rather new size of 128Mb. If you are lucky, you will find a new driver for your reader in Memorex site.

Hope it helps,
