Is XD a flakey system?

Hi

I'm new to XD (new F30), but used CF on my old Canon. I used the CF cards in a reader/ writer to save all sorts of computer files - left them on, put it back into the Canon, wrote and deleted image files, directories or whatever, including deleting the DCIM directories. Never a problem. The thing just looked after itself. Never needed a reformat. Same with SD on my sons Kodak. So long as there was room for a JPG amongst the mess, the camera/ cards worked perfectly. Is XD diferent, or is Fuji different, or are we all worrying about nothing?

I just purchased an F30 which is my second Fuji camera. I started with a Fuji A303 which continues to work well with XD card. I also have Sony H1 which uses Memory Stick. I sometimes download from the cameras and sometimes from Sandisk card reader which works for both. Cannot see any difference between cards except for size.

Hope this helps.

I personally think the problems with xD are overblown, I have not had many problems with xd cards, only with finding a card reader that reads the new 1 gig cards, but outside of that no problems really. Of course any camera that uses its own special one of a kind card is an aggravation, but Fuji cameras are pretty good and I would rather the camera use a special card that use a one of a kind special battery. So I can live with xd cards as long as Fuji cameras are good. Some people do not like xd and I'm sure that sd cards are better, but this is what Fuji and Olympus cameras use, so if you want a Fuji camera, you'll have to live with it or get another make of camera, but as far as xd being bad, I have not had many problems with xd cards. I have not tried the new 2 gig cards and that could be another story, but as far as 1 gig and under cards go, no problems what so ever except with my card reader and 1 gig cards.

No way, the card is solid, the readers cause 99.9% of the problems......I have not had one single problem in over 6000 images.......reformated once to clear the file sequencing numbering, from a card used on the F11, for use in my F30...... no card reader, couldnt pay me to use a card reader!

I have a 23-in-1 reader and it reads my xD perfectly. I guess just lucky because I bought this card reader last year, long before I was thinking of buying a fuji cam :-)

But I have to say that xD are so horrible slow!

Hi

The question is not about card readers - I use a Mausb-300. The question is - does the XD/ Fuji system tolerate all the things the SD and CF cards tolerate - odds and ends of various files, wiping directories, adding others - just as you would use a pen drive - then chuck it at the camera and have it work....

I don't think you could pay me NOT to use a card reader... as fun as hooking up the camera every time is. There have been so many reccomendations of card readers that work with xD original type, M-type, and H-type xD cards that to continue pretending they won't work properly is simply laughable. There are both internal and external xD card readers available on the market today that will read every type of xD card made (excluding the yet uknown 2gb size M-type).

Would you, should you, or be it be wise to format the xD card with a card reader? No... but that has also been discussed and confirmed to death.

Hi Cubensis

Don't think this question has been asked before... the reason I ask is that so many people post XD problems, and I would like to know if they are real, or imaginary.

So - will the XD system fall over if used like any old mem card, in and out of various computers, stuffed with all manner of files, or does it need special treatment.

The various comments have made me reluctant to use it other than in the camera, and sending jpgs to the computer via Mausb-300. There is a lot of work a 1gig mem card can do.

Believe me... this question has been asked many different ways... and the "does xD need to go/ does it have problems/ why does Fuji use xD/ xD is no good/ if only Fuji didn't use xD" threads typically come to the same conclusion. If you don't already own xD, you are convinced Fuji needs to switch so you can save money, if you own and use xD in a Fuji - you find that it is no less capable then any other flash memory card. All digital camera flash memory cards are propietary.... none of them work in ALL cameras.

Is an xD card a replacement for a USB flash disk? In some respects, yes. You can transfer files to it - skip the camera all together, and take those files to another computer. Is it gonna let you download a movie off the internet and play it on your Fuji? Doubtful.

I think the answer to your original post - if you're having a problem - is that the issue is Fuji, not xD. I have a Fujifilm S7000 which takes both xD and CF cards, and use a SanDisk card reader for downloading. I also have an older Fuji with Smart Media cards.

I've never lost any pictures or had problems with the cards in the cameras or card reader in normal use. BUT if I write back TO the cards from the computer, the cards are unreadable in the camera without reformatting. This is the same whether I write to the card at root level or into the DCIM folder.

I've also seen posts along the lines of "pictures taken on my friends Fuji won't play back on mine".

So I don't think the xD is flakey (there are threads around this site about how reliable it is in indepenent tests) but Fuji seems to have more in-camera software validation of files than the others you mentioned.

In other words, you can use your xD card as either a memory card for your F30 or as a flash memory for your computer with the Mausb-300, but not both at the same time.

XD and MS shouldnt be about.

XD is even worse in the fact its more expensive, and slower than SD.

Oly and Fuji lose customes who refuse to buy the cards, but they wont drop it, they will do at some point though.

A pointless format.

Barry, who appointed you the head of decision making for what memory cards are OK? As has been covered many, many times, xD works well, Fuji and Olympus cams use it, and xD cards are available under several brand names (Fuji, Olympus, Kodak, Sandisk, and I believe another one or two) at competitive prices. If you don't like xD then don't bother looking at Fuji or Olympus. There are far too many xD users here that know the real facts, I would suggest you try posting your half truths and false information elsewhere.

I know here in Moscow, xD cards are easier to find than SD cards, by that I mean you can find xD cards in more places than you will find sc cards. My subway station has a small battery shop that sells memory cards, and they have xD cards by Fuji and Olympus, but no sd cards. I stopped and bought an xD card and I asked the clerk why she did not sell sd cards? She said they were just not in demand here, everybody who buys cards always want xD cards. (talking about the location of the subway station and not Moscow as a whole) But then Fuji and Olympus cameras are very popular here, Fuji even has a large headquarters here and ads on billboards and magazines all the time. But at least here in Moscow, it is just as easy if not easier to find a xD cards as it is any other type of memory card.
