Each of these elegant structures is about 5 miles from my house so I feel privileged to see them several times a week in all kinds of lighting & weather.
  1. 1 is a Bible Church whose sign reads "Bible Teaching & Gospel Preaching". It faces north. The photo was taken about noon. Some post-processing done to increase contrast & sharpening for downsize compensation.

  1. 2 is a Reformed Church (Dutch Reformed, I assume). It faces west. This shot was made about 2pm. Some sharpening done for downsize compensation.

Thanks for looking.

They both have a neat, weathered feel to them, and I like the framing and composition. They also have a sort-of weathered, almost adobe like whitewashed feel against the deeper blue skies that makes it feel like a western movie.

Minor suggestion - Personally, I would love to remove the sign from the bottom left of the second photo...it just doesn't add anything to the feel of the photo - and being white, actually distracts my eye a bit and takes away the timeless feel. It should be pretty easy to clone out since it is sitting in front of a leafy bush.

Otherwise, quite nice!

Two great shots. I haven't had a chance to give my R1 a good workout yet and it's killing me.... I agree with Justin in reference to the sign, still a great shot though.

I've been making a concerted effort to take & carry the R1 with me everywhere - to get used to its heft & handling as well as being prepared to shoot things I've been waiting to for years.

It's an addictive experience using this thing but it does take some getting used to.

Old country churches are often fascinating, particularly in terms of their architecture and history. There are several such churches near me in Chapel Hill, NC. I'll post a couple of shots here before long.

How about country churches in other regions of the United States? If you have shots to share, I for one would like to see them.

New York & New England, probably dating back to late 18th - early 19th century.

I'm not sure why one faces north vs. west. Should churches face west? I thought they just faced the road. I mentioned their orientation so people would understand the lighting conditions they were taken under.
Thank you for looking & for your comments.

I'll look for more old churches as I drive around. I've been wanting to capture these 2 for a long time but didn't feel equipped until I got the R1.

I would be interested to see your church pics. If you post yours first, I'd suggest putting an invitation for "everyone to post their pics of old churches in this thread". Those kinds of threads usually draw a lot of activity.

Thanks for looking & for your comments.

That means that the church doors face west, and the people sitting in their pews face east.

If you use the great circle routes, (the most direct line between the church and Jerusalem), then people should be looking roughly north east and the church doors facing south west.

Catholic congregations would face Rome, which from North America is almost the same direction as Jerusalem.
Maybe, as you say, jp, most of the churches face the road.

Great shots JP! Really like how the highlighted areas came out! If/when you return to the church in the first pic, I'd love to see some shots more up-close, of the shapes and details of the pillars especially! ps -- were these processed from raw or jpeg straight from the cam?

of beautiful structures. Nicely done.

Now how about some Synagogues while we're at it.

But not many of them up around here, not old ones anyway. But there's one you're closer to - over on east 66th street between pk & lex I think. OUsed to see it taking the xtown bus. You'll need a real wide angle lens but it's a gorgeous building.

Thanks Martin. Those were jpgs but I went back & reshot cz I lost my orig tiff of this so shot in both jpg & raw this time. Lighting was the same - same sun same time of day but clouds were different - fluffy not smeary. (reminded me of the story of how Brando waited 43 days for perfect clouds when he was shooting a scene of one-eyed jacks).

I processed one shot like this one in Lightroom & did notice a difference - in the clouds & in the color of the inner molding on the steeple - a truer blue in raw - at 200% zoom!

Can't use Lightroom any more, too unintuitive & slow for me on my system. Sucked up every cycle on my machine ;-( Downloaded RSE ystd.

Will try for detail shots. Just for you. ;-}
