I'm looking for some advice on a lens purchase.

I use my XT for freelance photography for newspapers. I shoot a huge variety of things for them, from portraits to sports and everything in between. The problem is that I end up having to change lenses all the time and while I realize that is why DLSRs and great (the ability to change lenses for the condtions) I also am getting sick of
A. Dust on the sensor
and
B. Sometimes losing shots because I'm in the middle of changing lenses.

While I have never been a fan of getting an all in one lens, I think that for simplicities sake, it might be very useful right now. For my own photography purposes, I will be looking to get good glass, with ranges that are made specifically for their intended purpose (if that makes sense).

I currently own the kit lens, the nifty fifty 1.8 and a Tamron 55-200 zoom.

I would like to get a all in one lens for 500$ US or less in the 18-200mm range. I know that Tamron and Sigma both have these lenses. Does anyone know about these? I have a friend who owns the Tamron 18-200 and he loves it, and seems to produce decent pictures. Any others that you would like to recommend?

I appreciate any and all advice.
Have a nice day!

Many PJs use at least 2 bodies -- one for a wide zoom (say, 16-35 or 17-40), and one for a tele zoom (70-200 among the more popular). So that when the shooting gets fun, you're always ready. As against getting an all-in-one with too much sacrifice on image quality.

I do freelance PJ for some magazines and news agencies around here, and I use 17-40 and a 70-200 (f4 version) simultaneously during heavy shooting. If it's feature type, when I can have all the time I want, I bring just one body.

If you are a full time freelance photographer you don't need an all in one lens.

What you need is a backup camera with another lens on it.

I would highly recommend a pair of XT's with a canon 17-85mm IS on one and a Canon 100-400mm IS L on the other.

Peter Parker wouldn't have it any other way!

Good Luck!

Do not buy the "walkaround" lens. I did it when I bought my body. I thought, it would be could to have everything in one lens, and later I move on.

That's what I did pretty fast then, because the quality of this 18-200 lenses is not that good. I have the Sigma 18-200, and all I can say are : distortions, not sharp, to small to hold it good when zooming, loud and slow autofocus. At zoom end, nothing is sharp.. And you have to deal with F6.3.. That's not that good..

It is obvious that a good allrounder like the canon 28-300 L costs a few thousand $..

When you don't want to change all the time, then you need 2 bodies. If you don't care of changing, then you can slowly replace your lenses.

But don't think of buying this 18-200 lens. It really isn't worth it.

Your XT has 8MP. In order to have a decent photo in a newspaper you only need 1 to 2MP. This means you can crop a lot and still have a photo that is good enough for the newspaper. Especially with a photo that is razor sharp (which the 17-85IS will give you, especially at the long end) you can really crop a lot and still get a decent print.
