Caplio 500G

The Caplio 500G is for rugged extreme-sport type people. It has 8 megapixels, a 28mm lens like the R4, can survive up to -10C temperature and can be dropped 1m and still work. I bet it will be sooo expensive.

I saw in an older post that Tony Rose of Popflash said he will have it for $687.00. It looks like such a durable camera.

Just to clarify that is $687.00 US dollars, as Tony Rose of Popflash wrote on May 22nd in that earlier post.

I've been interested in this camera and it looks good on paper. I just hope the images it produces are worth it though. Noisy pics are a big no-no for me.

I think the 500G looks mighty impressive. If it really can "withstand falls from 1m onto 26 surfaces", then it must be something special. I'm not aware of other consumer cameras that offer this level of robustness - be they compact digicams or DSLRs. The question is, how many people actually need this? To most, the similarly-featured GX8 would be a better, lighter and cheaper option.

I want this camera to take pictures in the rain and dust etc and in places where I wouldnt take a DSLR. I miss too many great pics and Im also going to get the wide angle adaptor and if there is one made a right angle viewer. In my case a little noise will not bother me. Thank you everyone for your replies. Jeff

Hey there.

Purchased the Caplio 500G off of ebay. (from Japan - camera has english menu option, so no problem there.) I'm in Canada, and the Ricoh rep told me that this camera will never be marketed or available for sale in Canada, so I'm on my own as far as warranty is concerned.

Camera is a bit larget than the photos of it give the impression of. Camera appears bomb-proof (we'll see, I'm leaving on Monday for a 1 month canoe trip.) The only concern I have with it is how prone to scratching the front lens protector is (it has a screw thread, but I havn't taken it to a shop to get a uv/clear for it). I will say that the front lens glass wipes clean of water well. Don't think I even need RainX for it.

Body is very rugged. I would not even blink if I dropped it. Underwater shooting works well.

As for images, some purple fringing at the widest, with wide open aperature (to be expected really). There is noise, but it's tolerable for me at least. Flash is as advertised (BRIGHT!) but takes a bit of time to charge up (when you enable the flash, the camera 'shuts down' for about a second or two while the flash charges)

I'll post more when I get back.
Cheers,
-ben

Hey Ben,

I was talking with the CEID rep (the are the Ricoh distributor in Canada) out here on the West Coast - he tells me they are expecting the 500G in mid to late August. Although I am happy to hear you got one from Japan. Given the weather we have on the rainy weather we have on the Coast starting from November and ending March - it just maybe the ticket to shooting anytime anywhere.

Cheers. Terry.

Why don't you get a dslr with weather sealing and anti-dust thingy?
How much would such a DSLR (E1 I presume) would cost with a weather-sealed lens?
