First, let me clarify that I am not a professional photographer, i.e. I do not make money with photography.

I was doing yesterday all my gear inventory, and between December 2005 and now I spent around U$ 7K between my D200, lenses, ball head, tripod, etc.

I know that is “nothing” if we compared with the ones that make money with photography, but someone that has photography as a hobby is this insane or not?

Of course in terms of fun I can not measure in U$, but I start to be worried if I am losing my mind :)

Not really. When I was with Minolta I had the following.

Dynax 9 + VC 9
Dynax 5D
Lens:
AF17-35/2.8-4D
AF24-85/3.5-4.5
AF24-105-3.5-4.5D
AF28-135/4-4.5
AF70-210/4
AF75-300/4.5-5.6D
AF100-400/4.5-6.3
AF28-70/2.8G
AF80-200/2.8G APO HS
AF70-200/2.8G APO SSM
AF18-70/3.5-4.5DT
AF50/1.4
AF50/1.7
AF135/2.8[4.5]STF
AF200/2.8G APO HS
AF100/2.8D Marco
Flash:
5400HSS
3600HSD
5600HSD

It all took me about 1 year to sold them off. The last to go was the AF70-200/2.8G APO SSM. Now I switch system to Nikon and just got D200 with AFS18-70. My wife start to complaint again as I am aiming AFS12-24DX and AFS70-200ED next. But this time I will avoid overlapping.

Some of my friends have motorcycles as a hobby: $12000-$18,000 bike...add the add ones..accessories..insurance each year. Your camera total still less.

I just started golf: Country club dues, golf lessons, equipment, books, gadgets... a lot more than $7000.

Nothing to worry about I'd say. My brother has a good saying - "one should work for the life, rather than live for the work". Get the drift? ;-) Money is well spent if it brings you pleasure this way or the other, so go enjoy it!

If everyone cared and nobody cried,
If everyone loved and nobody lied,
If everyone shared and swallowed their pride,
We'd see the day, when nobody died

I totally agree with your brother, let me memorize this to tell my wife next time I buy another lens :)

I got to tell you that even though it is your hobby, who knows if one day you the perfect picture/moment some people would buy it from you and start to get some extra cash out of what you once called "insane" or "crazy".

You should feel great because if you would have spent 13.000 US$ or more on a fancy bike, you would never expect to get a penny off of it in return.

Enjoy it.

Do you make a lot of money? Do you have other debts? If you've got the money and are debt free then spend your money on whatever makes you happy. If you are racking up high interest credit card debt then you're crazy.

It depends on whether you could really afford it or not, and you're a better judge of that than anyone else on this board. That said, if you're borrowing money to pay for your hobby you have a problem. You should only spend on your hobbies after you've paid for the essentials- food, clothing, shelter, healthcare, education for your kids (if you have any), and some savings for a rainy day.

As with all creative work, the craft must be adequate for the demands of expression. I am disturbed when I find craft relegated to inferior consideration; I believe that the euphoric involvement with subject or self is not sufficient to justify the making and display of photographic images. --Ansel Adams

Mine is: I work to support my habits, namely photography

I am "crazy" but not that far :)

when i cross the threshold where I could have bought a BMW M5; i'll
start being concerned.
Replace that with a Lear Jet - you'd have a lot longer way to go ;)

Disagree with me all you like, but remember I have a right to an
opinion and a right to state it.

most people have at least one hobby. Most actually have multiples

boats
cars
golf
hockey
figure skating
sky diving
...

they all cost money and some cost a lot

as long as you can afford it and enjoy it why ask yourself a question like this. Of course it is worth it

There is a limit on how much drugs you can consume. You take just so much and you pass out. While with photography there is no limit at all on what you can acquire.

Face it! You are on a one way trip to hell. Your life will be ruined, and your wife and children will leave you. Moreover there are no treatment programs, and no sympathy for your kind of problems. Trust me, take up drugs and your life will be simplified... :)
