I'm just about to purchase the H5 (after months of pondering) and have now been faced with the choice of black or silver. For me the black looks fantastic but I know when I bought my W7 there were a lot of people who didn't like the black cos' it marked easily (greasy fingerprints). I wondered if, before I parted with the hard earned cash, anyone had any preferences for or against the black H5 - particularly owners.

Thanks in advance

Chris

Well my H1 is two toned silver and black, same as the H2/5 are available in, but I preferred the all black for my H5 and haven't noticed it being a problem, I'm the only person using it, but do pass it to others to see shot reviews. It really is personal taste. Welcome to the forum

Hi Jerry

Thanks for replying. The black does look good - I just popped into town to look at one and for me it looks more professional. I'm not sure that I'm going to let anyone touch my H5 though ;-> .

I was in a shop the other day buying a T30, and I asked if they had black. The salesman responds with no. So I asked why not. He tells me they were getting complaints from the customers that their black cameras get too dirty, so now they don't carry them. I thought that was rather odd, since they had a black H5 sitting on the display. :)

But considering the type of clientel this shop gets, I can understand it. (Think rich white whiney yuppies).

Another case of the salesman will make up any story to support what he has in stock. It's your fault if you believe him.

I think the T30's are more of a gloss black finish. The H5 more of a flat black. Much different. The T30 did show up fingerprints and dirt much more than the H5's. So definitely go with the H5 in black. Cool looking!!

Before anything, congratulations on the purchase of a new camera, which to me is the best feeling in the world.

OK, which color?

Simple

If you like black, go for black.
If you like silver, go for silver.

If you're worried about fingerprints, there are drugs on the market that do a good job treating the symptoms of OCD.

Fingerprints? That's a first.

Sorry for picking fun. You should see my camera gear. Dented, smudged, scratched. I go out in the hills and I bang lenses and cameras against trees and rocks all day, I'm lucky the stuff works, fingerprints are the least of my worries.

I bought a black H5 and have used it a lot for 2 1/2 months. I haven't wiped the body off at all and there are no finger prints or smudges of any kind on it. I often hold it with the fingers of my left hand on top of the flash and there are no fingerprints there. (That's a habit I have to break for when I need the flash). I just clean the LCD view panel with a good lens cloth as needed.

Other than that, it's just personal preference.

Black it is.

Our local Sony Store only seems to stock silver though I've asked if they can get black. It wasn't in their catalogue - I find it very odd that Sony can't stock their own stuff (or don't want too). I'll just end up going to
Jessops and part with £400 there.

Right off to the doctors for those OCD pills........

It's all upto you what you like. I liked the silver one since it gave me a modern cam look rather than a legendary black one :).

Hi Paul

I've bought two digicams off the internet and both have been lemons. One I sent off for repair got lost and the other requires me to fork out for sending it. I'd sooner pay the extra and be able to take it back to the shop and talk to them - especially since some people seem to have had probs with their H5s. I can't take not being able to talk to someone anymore.

Cheers

Chris

This is utter madness....my local Sony Centre called back (impressive) and said they don't and can't get the black H5. Its disappointing too as they provide a good service.

I own the silver model and shoot birds every day and have had NO problems. The only possible reflection problem arises from the shutter button and the jog dial on top which are shiny silver and are common to both colors.

Silver has been available from many dealers from the very first issue. I purchased a silver one from Abes of Maine back in May right after release.
