I was just curious how often the average STF member takes pictures. This is taking pictures just for fun, not because you are getting paid to. Please respond in number of days a week and/or average number of pictures.

I seldom miss a week without taking a picture, and, some weeks it might be 500+ pictures (although that would be rare).

  • I made 22.000 or more in one year exaclty.
  • I make photos every day.
  • I make 1500 to 2000 photos each month. Sometimes less, sometimes more. (This month I made more then 2000 shots)
I just love photography, but I know that 'professional photographers' make 20000 in a wild weekend or so.

Normally I carry my camera (V3) always in my office bag, which I can attach to my bicycle. In average I take picture every second day and funny enough even after 10 month of owning a digital camera I still find interesting subjects on the way to/from work.

On weekends I also take the camera more or less wherever I go, resulting in approximately 1000 - 2000 shots per month in total. I shoot quite extensively which I regard as a big improvement compared to film cameras.

Then the big question is on who many pictures I keep. On the one hand this distributes into family shots, where I think the percentage is about 25%. The "gallery" shots on the other hand allow to keep much less, maybe 2 - 4 % I would estimate.

Just about every day, the camera is where I am or very near by, all the time, about 300+ a week, trash most, alot is practice at this piont and trying diffrent recommendations and ideas prsented here. It takes alot of practice when you start from a no knowledge piont + trying to train/gain an artistic eye, which might never happen lol

..its hard to answer because I shoot for a living, but I'm lucky in that I do what I want and then make money on it.

I shot architecture early morning yesterday, again late evening, then had a "for fun" model shoot in a cemetary after dark...and thats a pretty typical day.

Ratio of keepers is my FAVORITE game...frequently I'll cover an event professionally and limit myself to 10 frames, meaning my keeper rate has to be at least 70% or I'm in trouble. Thats not normal though, if I were shooting carefree, I'd keep less than 10%.

A lot.

Fun thread...

To Patti. That many photos a month? Wow and my wife laughs as she says 'you take about 50 pictures a month and WHAT ARE WE GOING TO DO WITH THEM ALL?'

I am always amazed that thousands of photos are taken each month or so by forum members. And I keep wondering can a computer hold them all without crashing. Just a thought...it keeps me going. :-))

I have 7 DVD's with 4,7 GB on them from the last year.
I keep a lot of my photos, but there are always enough that I throw away.

My Computer would be completely full when I saved all my photos on it. My computer has only 40 GB.

It depends on the mood as well as opportunity. On an average I go once in a week for a long photography session. And I keep clicking here and there each day. On an average I have clicked around 200 photos per week.

It depends on the circumstances. If it is nice weather and I do feel good I will shoot up tp 2000 pictures a week. If I feel bad and/or I don't have a good subject ad the weather is not helping it can slow down up to a few shots in a week.

On average I think I shoot somewhere between 5000 and 10000 pictures a year.

I have always 16 batteries with me. ;)
4 of 2700 mah
6 of 2500 mah
4 of 2300 mah
2 of 2100 mah

But I was 3 weeks on vacation and didn't need my batterie charger at all. I used it, because I always want enough batteries, but I used 8 batteries in my whole vacation.

there are family shots, gallery shots, and lately also stock shots. Anywhere between 500-2500 a month maybe, but % of keepers is much lower of course. I like to take several photos and select the best one of it later on.

The last three months; May, June, and July I averaged 232 pictures, but we're only halfway through August and I already have about 310 pictures.

I go in spurts, this month 0, last month about 700. When traveling probably a minimum of 250 per day.

Keepers (ones I really like) maybe 10%. But I keep all except the mistakes.

I generally take my H2 with me wherever I go, and if im walking I usually find something interesting to shoot along the way. All in all, I probably shoot around 50-200 photos a week, just depending on the weather, and my mood. Keepers? Maybe 5%, 10% if im luckey!

Nice thread, I am interested in what other people do.

I mainly shoot on weekends, usually both days as part of walking or hiking or kayaking. About 300 shots per day and I keep anywhere between none and 10%, usually around 3%. I fear that if I get good the number of keepers is going to be an embarrassment! I am also about to retire and the camera features largely in my plans, maybe I should cut the ratio of keepers down further.

I have two old computers and each has 160gig of hard drive so I keep my shots backed up but I should also look at backup off site so if there is a disaster at home I can be covered. However if my whole collection got trashed (and there are some good shots there) I would almost relish the excuse to go and get similar shots again.

For me, taking a picture is a way of slowing down and seeing the world more deeply.

I shoot about 1,000/month. Out of 20,000 pics, I have 950 in my gallery.

However, I have way, way too many pics on my hard drives that should be deleted. A task I have set up for myself while my husband recuperates from surgery the next couple of weeks!!!!!

I have promised myself, I will TOSS the non keepers, immediately! We'll see.

Cheers, Denise
