HELP!! Having a lot of trouble with dpreview.com

Over the last couple of weeks I've been having a lot of trouble with page timeouts when I access this site. It doesn't seem to matter if I start at the main page or link right into a thread. There doesn't seem to be an consistancy. Sometimes I get a partial page before the timeout and sometimes the page doesn't load at all.

I don't seem to have any problems with other sites, FTP transfers or news servers.

I'm running ME with IE6 on a 56K dialup. Same problem on my other system which is also ME but IE5. I can dual boot to W2K with IE5 and I still have the same problem.

I know there has been an increase in traffic due to publicity.

Is it just me or do some you also have problems like mine?

Phil Askey has upgraded his system and has been having troubloes since. Everything appears to work except for the plain jane dpreview.com link with the snow flakes. Best to use one of the forum links to get on and then use the links at the top left of the screen to maneuver.

I have had serious delays in opening forum discussions. It has taken a lot of the fun out of this site, which I used to love. It took me 7 tries to get your message open. I hope Phil can find the problem soon. I am using windows XP. I wonder if that is part of the problem.

Nope. All the same problems on a Mac.

Same intermittent problems lately in the UK on Win98.

Our stats are currently showing an average of 50ms page generation speed with plenty of spare capacity and spare bandwidth. We are experiencing no server slowdowns or overload. I suggest you check with your ISP.

Phil: Thanks for your reply. The delays began about the same time as you upgraded your server so I assumed there might be a connection. I don't have similar delays with other websites, and I didn't have any problems before your upgrade. I live in the USA (Virginia) and I believe your hosting site is on this side of the pond also, so the undersea cable is not the problem. Since your server is working fine, I can only assume one of the internet gateways between my ISP and the network hosting your site may be creating a bottleneck, and there's not much we can do about that. (Did you also change networks or hosting site when you upgraded?).

As you can see from this thread some other folks are having a similar problem with delay, but there has not been a barrage of complaints, so I assume the problem is not all that widespread.

You have the finest digital photography site on the internet. Keep up the good work. Every camera manuafacturer should give you a commission. You must have helped to sell thousands of cameras.

I'm on Roadrunner cable.

I was just trying to post a new message in the Nikon forum. I tyoed out the message & hit the post button.

I got a "page not found" screen. I tried about 20 times & then gave up.

I never had these problems until recently.
 
No problems here.

I just upgraded from Road Runner one Way (No, you don't want to know) to @home and the site is VERY fast, except.........

When Netscape gets tangled up in its underwear. Then I stall about halfway down a page. This comes after I have been surfing for about an hour.
Close NS, open again, and again everything is great.
I'm using NS 4.79 and Windows ME.

There are quite a few complaints on the other forums too -- a variety
of problems -- all quite recent. I think Phil may not be getting a good
measure of the difficulties by looking only at page generation speed.
 
Hi DougK: I'm relieved that I'[m not alone in being timed out most of the time since Phil's upgrade. I'm using Erols, too, and have been having major problems reading posts here. Today is the first day that everything has been fine in a long while.

This should (finally) be now addressed. It's tough because we serve the best part of a million pages a day, half of those are people reading messages. If you do a 'view source' and look at the bottom of any page you'll see how long it took the server to processes the request, retrieve the data from the database and create the page. After that it's down to the pipe between us and your ISP. Example:

For two days, I have been able to post a few responses but whever I try to post a new message I get an unable to display the page error.

I just tried again & the same thing happened!!
 
Since this is my favorite bbs anywhere, this has been real annoying to me.

I have been posting here almost since the forum started & never had a problem before.

All the other sites that I visit work fine, & allow me to post with no problem.
 
pcmur: I just checked the erols.announce newsgroup and there is a message stating that they had fixed a routing problem on Friday 12/28. That's about the time that response from dpreview got a lot better. Let's hope that was the problem. I missed interacting with the wonderful people on this website.

Thanks for the info Doug.Everything's been full speed ahead for the last 24 hours. I guess Phil was right about the isp being the culprit rather than dpreview! Happy surfing with Erols in the New Year.
