best black & white convertion

Not sure I understand the question but...

I think you want Image/Adjustmants/Desaturate and then play with it

That's the path in CS2, I belive it is the same for PS7

hi i am using photoshop 7 and like to know what will be the best
covertion for BW photo thank you
if you find out please let us know. ;)

there are so many ways to do this...including 'actions'. i don't think there is a right or wrong way. just find one that suits you.

many like using channel mixers. simple desaturation doesn't give a punch to the end product and would require more work on it.

good luck

Maybe it's a good idea to have a closer look at Adobe Lightroom, my results with the B&W conversion and adjusting with this product are very good.
greetings,
Wim

yeah, my expierence with lightroom has been pretty good so far.

another thing to try i Bibble (www.bibblelabs.com) they have a buildin w/b plugin AND theres a 3rd party plugin that gives you even more control over the B/W conversion, really nice stuff and better than lightroom.

One that I use was contributed by William Bates in the past. Here it is:

Black and White Conversion – by William Bates
1. I do use the Channel Mixer adjustment to convert to black and white.
2. I do all my level, curves and color adjustments first.
3. Then I go to Channel Mixer and check the monochrome box.
4. Then I adjust the channels to about red 40, green 30 and blue 30.
5. I make minor adjustments to those values until I have the look I want.
6. Watch out the level numbers add to or about 100.
7. After that I might increase the contrast.
8. Then it is resize and then sharpen as needed.

I have a few examples at my pbase site of this technique in use. Here are three:

http://www.pbase.com/bike50now/image/62465703

I used it on the background on this montage image, but then dropped the opacity as well:

Good luck!

Sorry, I don't have a reasonable clue why you are getting the blue.

Be sure you are following the steps exactly as written. Check the monochrome box in step 3. I generally use the setting listed in step 4. In step 7 I have been using +10 for the contrast.

If you search the forums for William Bates you may find his references to this procedure.

As others have said, there are actions and other methods available for BW conversions, many worth experimenting with.

Good luck.

If you're really sending a true B&W to the printer (Mode/Grayscale) then the file has no color - not a smidge.

So what's left is that your printer is not adding up the colors right. Since it uses Yellow, Cyan, and Magenta inks (no blue) then it looks like your yellow ink ("not-blue") is inadequate. Do a Maintenenance check on the printer Utilities and see if you have a clogged nozzle or two - it could be the yellow ones - clean cycle until it gets right - then print again.

If this doesn't work, as a last resort in your printer driver select "Use Black Ink Only" which avoids the color carts. This does not help with the gradations of gray - depends on the picture - but it assures no color will be printed.

...on Epson printers when printing b&w select the printer preferences

Click on the Advanced tab
Select Colour Control and turn Cyan to -5 and try again.

If it still looks a little blue try -7 if it starts to look a little warm then try -3.

Keep experimenting this way until you are happy with the result and then save that setting. You can print small patches of grey on an A4 sheet so as not to waste paper.

Bear in mind that each set of inks and paper will give slightly different result and you may have to adjust again in the future.

-- http://www.atncentral.com - load up Julians B&W conversion action. Contol of Hue-lightness/darkness Selective Color - Levels - Curves BEFORE the conversion (you can see the effect you are having on the B&W) and all in one action. Just double click on the icons in Layers. Works wonders in CS should work in 7 I think.

Go to image, then mode, then lab color- on chanel mode throw out b channel, then throw out alpha channel 2. then duplicate alpha channel A twice. then go back to image, then mode and then RGB. make contrast adjustments and Levels if desired.

Gradient Map , to make your image B&W (make sure your black and white boxes are checked on the tool bar color palette).

Then curves, color balance, contrast,(color balance to add minor tones), Selective color, channel mixer if you want a little more adjustement..
but the key is CURVES and that has to be mastered.
