Bug ID please

Thanks for the post Randy. I shot one in my yard a few weeks ago. The shot was not great like yours so I was trying the trial version of NX to see if I could make it better in order to post it and ask the very same question.

Well, you beat me to it and with a much better shot. I have never seen one of these before. I was patiently waiting by our butterfly bushes trying to catch a shot of anything but......it actually startled me. At first, I too, thought it was a really strange humming bird. Then realized it was a type of insect. They really are quite fascinating.

Thanks again for posting a much better shot and eliminating my curiosity.

BTW....I have so much to learn about PP. Where do you start? What is the order of progression to properly alter an image without overdoing it? Hopefully there is a good book or DVD tutorial to explain the basics of what all of the different options do and how you marry them together to achieve what so many of the pros seem to do here. All I will say is that as a complete beginner, I do find NX easy to navigate and fun to play around with. I also learned that the Raw shots, when saved, can be brought back to the original, but an altered JPEG fine cannot. Gald I only did a few for fun!

Take care!

Ron

as others have said, it's a hummingbird hawk moth, they pupate in 1.5 inch long chestnut brown pupae in the ground. They're quite common over here in Austria, and are particularly partial to all the butterfly and bee flowers, such as buddlia and lilac (as in your photo?) as well as lavender and all the varieties of mint (and catmint) and herb flowers.
Great shot. You're gettign better all the time mate.

is probably very diff from most here...
Keep is simple...
I shoot RAW but because I think it captures more detail (I could be wrong)
For this shot, like 90% of my pics, I use NC and
USM =30,5,0
Color Booster = Auto
d-lighting to taste
chg size to 1280 pixels
save as a 'good' jpg
call me latter in the week and I'd be happy to discuss (email me for phone#)
