How about it guys! Want to start this discussion here?

I'll start: I'm a retired elementary school teacher, piano teacher, and machine knitting dealer kept busy these days with computer graphics (using Paint Shop Pro to turn photographs into hand drawn sketches using a drawing pad). My Havanese puppy, Ricky, and gray tabby kitten, Louie give me a myriad of photo ops. I will soon be midi-ing a new synthesizer to my computer so I can produce music for slide presentations made from my photos. Have been watching the 5000 and Sony 707 and have decided to wait for the next generation of cameras...have been 95% thrilled with my 990.

Hi Isabel, I’ll give it a shot.

I work for one of those big oil companies in Houston Texas and while I always have my Coolpix 950 with me, photography is not part of my current job. I actually manager one of those downtown skyscrapers. So I guess my current photography is more of a hobby or for me you could say a habit.

I was the Track Photographer at a local race track (autos not horses) for 15 years (weekends) and really learned a lot about action/sports photography. Frankly I loved it, but it was just taking too much of my time. Now, I’d love to earn enough money just taking pictures, but realistically that's not in my immediate future. There are way too many better photographers out there.

The best thing about my years as a photographer was I could always justify buying more camera related toys. Unfortunately, digital came along after I gave up the business and I’ve been hard pressed to justify the dollar investment in a D1X. However, I keep thinking if I’d just commit to another 9 months of shooting every Saturday night I could go buy what I want. Oh well, I guess time will tell.

I’ve really been following this forum over the passed couple of months because I was interested in the C5000 feedback. From what I’ve seen it looks like a real nice camera despite all the negative posts. However, I think I’m just going to keep using my 950 and old 35mm until the right (affordable) Digital SLR comes along.

OK, here goes.

I worked as a bicycle shop manager for many years, while I was also a competitor in "ultra-marathon" racing. UM racing is classified as "at least 200 miles in 24 hours". My longest race I ever did was a 700 mile qualifier for the "Race Across AMerica" (RAAM) in 1985. It took me about 48 hours (to do the 700 miles). Then in '88, I rode my bicycle across the country, self-supported, with tent and cooking gear. A few years later, I took up speedskating (ice and in-line), until I had a bad crash about 2 years ago. No more speed sports (for a while :) ).

Now, I work in a hardware store, while trying to learn Photoshop in my fre time. I had a B&W darkroom in the 70's, but my digital darkroom is so much more fun! I have a 990 which I will keep for along time yet. I think I need to see some profound jumps in digicams, before I make another investment. I still use my first SLR I bought with savings from my very first job in 1974 (Argus, w/ Cosina lense).

My muse? It's my 23 month-old Greyhound, Zoomer, who is constantly giving me photo opportunities, that is when he's laying around. It's difficult to focus a 990 when he's in full sprint at 45 mph! Now I'm just waiting for some more snow; I love winter pictures!

Zoomer ("Where's that steak for payment on my last modeling assignment?")

PS Isabel: Do you have a photo book (or more) out? I thought I saw one with your name on it in the mall last week? It was beautiful! I love the desert scenes. If that wasn't yours, sorry for the confusuion.

Wow Isabel, what a freshing topic...the person behind the camera instead of the camera itself.

I'm a secondary school teacher. I teach Pre-AP Biology in a magnet school in Lubbock, TX. I have five daughters of the canine persuasion. They too provide me with photo ops, but they do not like that I spend too much time with my high tech toys. My photography consists of pictures for my pleasure, to be used in my teaching, or for the school during recuitment. I just recently upgraded to a 995 from a 990. I was interested in the CP5000, but after checking my list of requirements, found it wasn't the camera for me.

I'm an independent contractor (read self-employed) with the US Department of Defense. Primarily an Oracle database administrator, and do applications when needed. I just moved into a nice area of Washington DC and am loving being able to walk just about anywhere. When I settle in, I'll start taking my 990 out with me.

I have both an Olympus C2500, and the CP990. I use the Olympus mainly for people and portraits (it's better suited for that than the 990), but love the 990 when I travel and take walks. I have no plans to upgrade equipment, but I do keep busy upgrading my skills.

When I find the time, I like scanning airline deals and going somewhere. It seems I'm always flying off to Stockholm Sweden to visit friends and polish up my swedish language skills. I'll be going again in January - my FIRST visit during winter. Considering the recent cold spell, I wonder if my NiMH batteries will function.

My first camera was an Olympus OM-1 with an assortment of Zuiko lenses. The body was stolen during my first house break-in, then I bought a used OM-2, but that got stolen too in a later break-in, this time along with my lenses. Then I bought a cheap-ish Canon EOS Rebel, with one of their budget AF lenses, and I got disatisfied with film photography. My first digital cam was the Oly C2000, which had focus issues, so I traded it for the CP990. I had also bought a Oly 2500. When I first got the 2500, I was really loving the quality - color, sharpness. I didn't really like the pictures on the 990 at first, but over time, I began disliking the quality from 2500, and really liking the results from the 990. That's the learning curve I guess.

A friend borrowed my cameras to shoot a wedding, but now presented me with a huge print order of bunches of 5x7s and 8x10s. My HP P1000 is not the right printer for a wedding album, so I'm thinking about getting a Olympus P-400. Or just telling my friend to take the files to a printing service.

Ooooh... who am I?

I'm a Swede (as you might have guessed because of my spelling), right now long-term sick but hope to get back to work after new years after many years of being home due to my health. I work at a newspaper with page layout and I'm doing graphic design aswell. I try to build a few homepages now and then too since I love to play with graphics programs (I prefer Photoshop and FreeHand).

In less than 6 months from now I'm getting married to my canadian boyfriend that I met 5 years ago. He moved to Sweden to live with me and I'm very greatful for that since my health would have stopped out love affair otherwise.

I picked up a camera the first time when I was 8 years old, my dad gave me an used compact camera. When I was around 15-16 my mom bought me my first SLR camera and I was a fairly active photographer for a few years. But when I started to work the time to photograph just wasn't there anymore. I put my cameras away and my enlargement equipment and forgot all about it. I even picked up a small compact camera to bring for vacations since I didn't have the motivation to photograph for "real".

Last fall I became curious about digital cameras. I had seen the Nikon Coolpix 950 getting good reviews earlier but I couldn't afford the newer model (then the 990) so I bought an used 950 to try this digital photogprahy out. I LOVED IT!!! I think I've taken 10 times more pictures than I've taken since I first got my first camera 30 years ago or so. No looking back now.

I sold my 950 this summer so I could afford to pick up the 995. I couldn't be happier with that. I love the more megapixles so I can print out nice 8x10's on my Epson printer. Right now I've been busy planning my wedding so I haven't been taking much photo's recently, but I hope it'll pick up again once the wedding is over (I'm probably going to drive my then husband nuts giggle "no honey, I just need to take a shot of this, kisses has to wait").

Welp, I guess that's all about me. :-)

I am presently a Realtor in Kissimmee/Orlando Florida. I was born in Lexington,Ky and have a wife a two children, Danielle 14 and David 12.

I owned and operated Auto Repair Shops in Lexington for 25 years Because of lack of good help, I closed the shops in 1999 and became a Realtor in Lexington. My mother passes away last year and we decided to move to Florida. I am getting things established here and my family will move down this summer

I take alot of pictures of Houses in Real Estate and love the 995 camera. I had a Sony Mavica before and the 995 is just a better all round camera. I also like to take Macros as I do alot of ebay auctions as a sideline.

This forum has been an enjoyable place and I have picked up alot of knowledge from alot of people. Thanks for being good friends!!!

Hello Everyone,

I think this is great, wanting to know about the person behind the camera. I'm a application intregrator for a very large company. (Hint: Willy Wonka works for us ). I have been taking pictures for a few years, usually with my Canon Rebel II and now the Rebel 2000. The Nikon 995 is my 2nd digital camera, I had the Kodak DC4800. I didn't use that much due to the fact that when the lens is extended it shows up in the viewfinders and takes up the bottom right hand corner of the picture. Nikon seems to be working well, 'cept for color saturation in some scenes. So far I love the Nikon 995.

(went offtopic)...I'm 28 years old, married, no kids yet. I like to watch sunsets, as you would notice, most of the pictures are of sunsets. Wherever I go, I try to go watch the sunset. I play around with graphic programs like Photoshop, PhotoEdit and sorts. Not a serious graphics designer, but just enough to make something up for myself. I'm living in Los Angeles area now, moved from New York about 5 years ago and got married in LA. ...I'll add more about me as I remember :)

Happy Holidays Everyone.

I'm a retail sales manager for a large firm. I've lived my whole life in southern California (48yrs). My real passion is art. This was my major in college. Photography was my way of capturing images I would later transform to watercolor or canvas.

My plans are to retire in 2 yrs and travel with my wife and new baby (D1X) I started digital with the CP990 and loved it, in fact I still own the 990.

I have a very understanding wife. When challenged about my spending the amount I have invested for the D1X and lenses she replies" some guys have boats and motorcycles, Craig just has his cameras". I gotta love this girl.

My other interest are surfing, camping, hiking and fishing and of course reading about everybody else here in the forum.
Regards,Reno

Nice to meet the "real" Petra! Your English is a whole lot better than my unexistent Swedish!

My interest in photography started when I was a little girl too. I was fortunate enough to have an uncle who steered me towards a Retina IIIc folding rangefinder 35mm camera. I just loved that thing. Unfortunately it was stolen when my apartment was broken into several years later.

That same uncle helped me set up a black and white darkroom and I worked as a photographer on my college newspaper.

I find photography one of the most fulfilling of my many hobbies, mainly (even moreso now with digital) because of the instantaneous production of something memorable.

You may want to play with something I've been doing recently with Paint Shop Pro (of course you can use Photoshop or some other graphics program that allows you to work in layers). I've been taken photographs, adding a new layer and sketching over them. The images are used for cards sold to benefit an organization that is researching the cause of heritable cataracts in the havanese breed. Here is one of my sketches:

P.S. My husband is a saint too...very supportive of my largely expensive hobbies. It's hard to get him to buy anything for himself (understandably, I guess!)

Greetings from Michelle in Northern California (FARRRR Northern)!

I am a 43 year old single mother who works fulll time as a legal assistant to a criminal defense trial attorney. Occasionally I photograph evidence (i.e., fingerprints) with my CP880, which does an astounding job in macro on a tripod; however, my camera is mainly a hobby for personal enjoyment. I drool occasionally over newer models but am not unhappy with the CP880. It is never far away from where I am. I constantly make portraits and prints for friends. Many of my Christmas presents were nicely framed 8x10's!

My 9 year old daughter Georgia and I live on five acres in the mountains in a little house built of straw bales I built myself (hold the big bad wolf jokes, please!) -- the first of its kind around these parts! Also present: A Black Lab, three cats, a guinea pig, a Gecko named Speedy, and an Arabian named Al. I'd post a link to my PhotoPoint albums of all of the above, but they've been off the air for two weeks now with no announcements as to when or if they'll reappear.

I'm an absolute fishing fanatic and also like hiking (we live near Mt. Lassen Volcanic National Park), caving, rappelling, camping, reading, cooking, playing in Photoshop 5.5 and now PS Elements too, though I've a lot to learn....

I just treated myself for Christmas to a new Compaq PC with 256 MB of RAM so that each step of photo editing no longer puts me to sleep but absolutely SMOKES with speed!

Nice to meet y'all!

Michelle

Nice to meet you, Michelle!

Sad about Photopoint, isn't it?

After two hard drive crashes we finally got a CD Writer and all the photos I want to keep go on a CD-R. I no longer use CD-RWs since I had one go bad on me and could access anything I had "backed-up" on it.

When Zing went under they offered to transfer your files to Ofoto and I took them up on that...but since I don't upload full-sized files, I still back up on CDs.

I truly hope Photopoint does the right thing by its customers.

Isabel

Ranch boy raised in the sticks of far southwestern Nebraska. Grandfather of 3, father of 3, married 38 years tomorrow (12/28), interested in photography since getting my first camera for Christmas at age 8. Insurance Claims guy for 38 years. Adjuster, Manager, Fraud/Arson Investigator, Claims VP, and now Litigation Manager. My major claim to fame is that I learned most of my photography in a B&W darkroom about 2 blocks from where a young Jim Brandenburg (see http://www.jimbrandenburg.com/home.html ) was learning his skills. (I have several of his works personally autographed by him.) Did wedding photography on the side with 2 1/4" square format (Bronicas, Mamiya's) for about 5 years - until it became too much like a second job. Throughout my insurance career, I used good cameras to document and create evidence, and in the past 3 years as a hobby, migrated to the 950, 990 and 995. I am now seriously considering the CP5k. Also have recently been granted a patent on a little fastener (see http://www.grippitz.com/ ) subsequent to my wife telling me that I had to hang the Christmas lights two years ago. Monster home-built PC to manipulate my images: 100G HDD's, 1.4 MHz CPU, 1G RAM, 64MB video card, USB 2, new Epson 2450 scanner, etc. Isn't this technology great, and what a wonderful time to be alive, from that standpoint. I love this stuff. Call me an elderly geek, and I guess that will describe me.

The group pic was taken with a Kodak DC260, my first dc, individual pics of Juji and Gerda with a 990, and the one with them playing with the 995.

Grete is a Lab/Dalmation mix, Ellie is a German Sheppard mix, Tulla is a German Shorthair, Gerda is a Manchester/Sheltie mix, and Juji is a Great Dane. Except for Juji, the others were rescued from an animal shelter or pet store.

Excellent topic, here's my contribution:

It seems my life is shorter than most of your careers but I will try and making this filling! I am 30 years old, currently unemployeed but working on a java application for my own business to be started in 2002. In the last 22 months I was employed as a computer programmer at TheStreet.com, an online fanancial news service. Prior to that for two years I worked at a huge bank (Hint: C and JP) as a w2k technician, lan support rep, and network administrator in that order. I have been working in Information Technology for the last 6 years in total, while getting my electrical engineering degree in 1997. As a kid I was always into drawing and comic books, and I taught myself a great deal about illustration. I must admit many times in college when I should have been studying laplacian transformations I was learning about the great illustrators instead. ( Da Vinci, Rockwell, Loomis, Frazetta, Vajello...etc.) It was a great experience as there is a great deal of confluence between artistic and mathematical technique ( at least I think so.) I learned to see art from a technical perspective, and mathematics ( read science) from an artistic perspective. In 1995 I started scripting html web pages, my major necessitated the use of C++ for running simulations so going to html was no problem, since I was an early teen I was always into programming. ( Basic on my Atari 800XL in 83') My chief motivation being the perfect marriage of my technical and artistic skills, Computer Graphics Imagery. I've been rendering and modelling in 3dstudioMax, Rhino, BMRT, Lightwave and photoshop for image editing, but I am also very much intrested in theoretical CGI.(Which I've yet to make a contribution toward, no time!) Around 1996 I was introduced to digital cameras, using one of the early Kodak cameras (dc90?) to take pictures of students for security purposes in the computer lab that I worked in. I've always loved anything and everything technical, so once I knew about DC's the bug was in me, in 98' I got my first DC the DC260 from Kodak and really liked learning about photography, but since it wasn't a full manual camera I couldn't explore the real details of true photography. In November of 2000, I purchased the CP990 and have been in love with it. It's really a pretty versatile camera, I've got the 2x teleconverter lens, a flash bracket (versatek) and the SB28 flash. I use the camera for candids, macro and landscape photography. I won't be buying a new DC until an affordable DSLR with 5+ megapixels is available around the $2,000 price point.(Something like a D1x Advanced ameteur) Currently, I am making progress on my application and business (not photography related) and am unmarried though very much in love with my girlfriend. (soon fiance, soon wife...) Here is a link to some of my photos:
