Canon always has more cameras on dpreview.com's list for clicks in the last five days. What makes Canon so much more appealing than Nikon for a high percentage of consumers and pros?

Marketing. They both are equally good in my opinion. Nikon is the sports shooter preferred tool. Canon seems to be the landscape shooters preferred tool. I've always been a Canon man but made the switch to Nikon because of price point and going against the norm. I like the Nikon lense more.

I've seen just the opposite. Lots of Canon lenses at sporting events and more nature shooters using Nikon.

Why is Ford Taurus number one seller?
Why was VW bug #1?
  1. 1 only means one thing, sold more units, it is not a measure of quality either good or bad.

Everything happens for a reason.
  1. 1 reason: poor planning

I'd agree without a doubt. Canon really seems to dominate the sports world.

I know it's been said time and time again, but what is their deal with the physical user interface. I just think that Nikon blows them away in controls.

A name can really make a company.

Canon

It just sounds cool. Besides that it really is the marketing. As a teenager all I saw were the ads for Canon with Andre Agassi. I don't think I'd even heard of Nikon until I was older.

Yes definitely. That's why I will stick with Nikon even if the image quality may be better elsewhere. To me, the Nikon is a photographer's camera and the professional heritage shines through even on the entry level products.

The ergonomics are wonderfully thought out and everything is at hand and easy to use.

I've always been a keen motorcyclist and just like a good bike, I find the Nikon in time becomes an extension of myself and I can concentrate on the job in hand.

Agree with marketing and its history in advertising. Also, their high ISO performance today and their IS lense selection.

While I agree with your cliché statement that popularity does not mean quality (who doesn't?!), your Ford Taurus comparison is not at all analogous to Nikon and Canon. Since the two companies are direct competitors of each other, and have nearly the exact same product line that targets the exact same market, there must be a some reason why Canon is chosen much more frequently for even the first-time digital camera buyer.

Brand loyalty and a large amount of acquired lenses and accessories of Canon can only be part of the reason (after all, there also many people like this with Nikon). Canon is selling more cameras to all kinds of people -- pros and first-time buyers alike.

At the consumer level, it's all marketing. That's why Coca-Cola is able to take tap-water (here in the US), filter it, and sell a zillion gallons as Dasani. Canon's marketing to consumers is far superior to Nikon's.

For pros it gets a little more complicated.

If you believe the canonites, its simply because Canon is generations ahead of Nikon.

The reality is Canon has much more marketing power. "Wildlife as Canon see it" ads have been in magazines like National Geographic and Smithsonian for a long time. Up till recently I never saw a Nikon ads in those magazines. If you look at sporting events, even the press passes have "Canon" slapped all over them. Seems the Canon name is slapped everywhere. Where did I see Nikon marketing? Tennis matches is about all I can recall. lol.

Then people buy them, want to believe what they have is the very best (which seems to stem from insecurity of their gear... how else do you explain the hypocritical arguements you see on Canon forums?), so become rabid loyal fanboys and push anyone buying toward their brand. More free marketing.

I'll jump on board with marketing as the main reason. I always wanted a Rebel and it was only because it was the only SLR that I saw advertised, film or digital. It wasn't until my wifes Aunt came to visit and I used her D50 for a day that I wanted a Nikon, plus I felt the Rebel and it was too small.

Sometimes I wonder if Canon gives retailers a better cut.

I have no empirical evidence other than my own expereinces but retailers seem to push Canon harder than Nikon.

For instance, if you go into a camera store and say "I want to get my first ever DSLR" then odds are they will steer you towards a Rebel XT. They won't salm Nikon, but they seem to push the Canons.

If I'm not mistaken, there are more canon than Nikon P&S camera. I know few people that first bought Canon P&S and continue with canon brand, just because they used it before and it seem only logical for them. there reason was why go with other brand when they could trust their Canon.

I am also thinking Sony user would do the same. if that's true than Canon will loose some of their market share to Sony.

Growing up in the 70's and getting the shutterbug itch, Nikon was THE choice of pros. I remember seeing Nikon ads featuring the Nikon F2A and Formula 1 race cars in the background and dreamed about owning the F2A. Then I remember watching the first "King Kong" remake w/Jeff Bridges. He was using the F2A (or one of the many variants) and looked so cool. That did it for me. I had to get a Nikon! I've been shooting with Nikons since 1980.

I started shooting with Canon since 2001 mainly out of to curiosity of their IS lenses. They had several and some were affordable. Nikon only had the pricey 80-400VR lens.

As far as image quality goes, you can get great pictures with either system. Nikon vs. Canon debates are getting really old. Just choose your system and be happy.
