A docen G5 Macros

With patience :-)

Well, not too sofisticated. I observed that bug feeding in the flowers. It took some time to move from flower to flower so I just prepared my G5 in macro mode at maximum zoom, Av f8, high speed continuous shot, flash on (to try to stop the wings and avoid deep shadows) and get a sequence of 8 shots while the buf was turning around the flower. Most of them were fine, but this is my preferred one.

This camera is amazing. I have now also a S3, but I doubt I can take macro of this quality with the S3, maybe using a macro lens. G5 didn't need any accesory to get that shots. And image quality is superb, nothing to do with S3 imho.

Jose

Very well done with the G5. After looking at your macros, I just can't blame my G5 for not able to capture such a clear photo like yours. Good skill is required to bring up the best potential of my camera.

And some people are still looking for cameras producing images of good quality!!!! They buy every new camera released and are still looking for better :) I guess they simply have no time to take pictures.

Amazing work with your G5. What is it on the seconds picture?

I believe it's a Humming-bird Hawk-moth. You get them here in the southern UK.

Great photo's btw! I spent most night's last week taking picture of butterflies in my garden..

BTW is it me or do the Older camera's tend to produce better image quality? Or could it be just that the users have had them longer so know them better?

Yes, it's a Humming-bird Hawk-moth (Macroglossum stellatarum). Its Spanish name is Esfinge colibrí.

Regarding the image quality, I think it is being forgoten in the last nonDSLR Canon cameras, in favour of a lot of options not really needed. And I'm also a victim of that fashion. I also have a S3, I love such powerful zoom, but image quality is not close to the G5 by far. (And G5 has also some problems btw...).

S3 macro hability is disapointing, far away from G5's. I know a lot of people think that Super-Macro mode in S3 is superb, but I don't agree at all. You need some distance between the camera and the subject. Being able to shot a subject which is touching the front lens in wide angle mode is not the aim of macro shots, imho.

I'm waiting for Lensmate adapters to try the S3 with full zoom and closer focus distances. We'll see. But S3 lacks hot shoe for flash, takes a century in recharging the in-camera flash and has that terrible CA! So, I will maintain the G5 with me for a long time, I guess.
Thanks all for your kind comments, very much apreciated.

Jose

I love this thread, partially because I am a G6 owner, but mostly because the line of thinking is right. Great images are shot by people, not cameras. Many of the complaints about noise, speed, feature comparisons, etc. on these forums simply don't hold up under the light of photographic knowledge and skill.

Many of the cameras that are in people's hands today can take excellent photographs. All that is needed is some skill, some attention to detail, and taking the time to get to know the camera that you have. Instead of running out and getting the latest and supposedly greatest new gadget with the newest features, most people would be better off learning to get the most out of what they already have.

Thank you for re-affirming that again, Jose

Hello,

Exactly my thought as well, jay_b & vanyager.

Great shots. I am a G5 user myself and I do a lot of macro shots with similar resuls.

It's nice to hear and see that not everyone is looking for the latest model but just can enjoy their gear and make good looking pictures.

Thanks for sharing
