D50, JPG Burst slower than NEF Burst mode ?

I have a D50 and i use Sandisk Ultra II SD. I want to buy more for my upcoming trip in August to Edinburgh festival.

I'm not very happy with the burst mode using nefs, it only buffers 3 (quickly) and then it becomes slow. I don't know what speed are the Ultra II, 60x perhaps.

BUT doing some tests, i see that switching to JPEG Fine, the burst mode is much slower, taking one shot per second (or close to that) BUT never stops.

I don't understand WHY Jpg burst is so much slower than NEF. I prefer to shot 3 shots quickly and then wait 2-3 secs, instead of the JPG sloweness.

Finally, will 150x speed help ? I'm thinking to get a 2g SD at 133x or 150x.

Thanks

do you have Noise Reduction (NR) on? that slows it down.

I noticed on my D70 that if I have any custom curves loaded, or if I do change the saturation, contrast, sharpening, and hue settings that the burst mode goes slower. If I put everything to 0 or normal, burst mode gets faster.

It seems that the in-camera post processing sometimes slows things down.

It may be true as well with the D50.

Well yes, but that is for photos than need long exposure. In
daylight it makes no difference and also i think IF it needed to
be used NEFs also are subject to nr.

The idea behind NR is that the camera takes a "dark frame" when you do a long exposure, and uses that to remove noise. In order to do this it has to change the way the internal buffer is alocated, and as a result the framerate is reduced if you have NR turned on, regardless of your shutter speed.

Actually this is totally wrong. From page 78 of D50 manual:

Long exposure nr: If ON, then photos taken at shutter speeds slower than 1 sec, will be processed with NR before written.

Also you can SEE a NR flash in your display.

So clearly this is not the case.

Nope, it's not wrong. I'm not saying that NR is applied regardless of your shutter speed.... I'm saying that the change in the way the buffer is allocated will slow down your framerate, regardless of your shutter speed.

Turn off NR and see if there's any improvement. :-)

went up to about 3/sec when I reset this NR setting. Give it a shot, can't hurt.

The NR slows down my D50.....the darker it is the more it slows down...but its slower in bight sunlight.

Mea cupla reading your reply. Sorry.

Actually you right. Turning OFF the NR speeds up the JPG burst mode. Makes NO difference (for some reason) in NEFS .

Thanks

Ok, final question. Do i gain something from 60x SD to 133 or 150x SD speed ?

The price difference is 73 euro the 150x and 42 euro the 60x (2 giga)

Does D50 profit from speed above 60x ?

I have a san disk ultra 2 1gig sd card in my D50.

The focus mode and NR and all kinds of things will affect your framerate. that said. I generally get about 2fps until i let go. I dont think I have tested this beyond about 30 frames. but once the buffer drops down to about 9 or 10 frames it just stays there. the buffer keeps up with it. I really dont see why anyone would need more than 30 frames in a row, but I'm sure there is a reason somewhere. lol

I believe my card is 140x or 150x and I get 2-3 fps in NEF or jpg
mode for atleast 10 to 15 shots in NEF and about 25 shots in jpg.
I've never used a slower card with my D50 to say for sure but these
numbers seem better than what you are experiencing.
Just found a deal for a 2 Giga Twinmos 150x (!) card for 52 euro (around 45 $). Is that any good as a brand?

Hi there,

But will D50 be able to recognize 2Gb card as 2Gb and not something less than that?

Brand loyalty isn't my thing.

I tend to go with what i can afford and what works. I use Sandisk only because it's what was available at the time when I bought my camera. but the 150x is a nice spec. You should do well in your fps with that speed. Hopefully someone else can vouch for that brand.

While not a scientific test I have used cards ranging in size from 1 to 2 gb and in speeds from 32X to 150X in the D50 and I see no difference in speed.

I hate to mention this but I have a couple 32X cards in 512 and 256mb size and they are noticably slower.

I have the 1GB Ultra II and can get 4 shots @ NEF and about 14 @ JPEG Fine. I was told on this forum that getting a quicker card should not make a difference as the D50 cannot write any quicker. Unfortunately it's the camera and not the SD card.
