That's an interesting gadget introduced by Sony, it stores info on exactly where you took pictures and you can even see maps of the area. I'm not sure it will sell. And it's $150! Hmmm.... strange.

Would you buy it?

Oh sure, the folks that buy cameras on the first release day, sight unseen love this kind of stuff. :)

I have never been able to figure any use for a GPS although I am very well aware of some really fine commercial and industrial uses. I just don't happen to need one.

DSLR?
I ain't got no DSLR.

I don't have to show you any stinking DSLR!
It's the picture stupid! The picture - not the toy

I see recording time listed as 12 hours or so on a battery. but the bigger question is how long will it record GPS data overall before it fills up its internal drive and has to be uploaded to a computer? Also, can it be uploaded to another device, such as a portable harddrive or other storage unit?

I don't see it as useful as much as I see it as fun - but I would like to be able to use it for trips of 7-14 days...and I won't have a computer available for most of these. So if it can't store more than a day or two of data it is basically worthless - but if it can store a week or two...I think it might be fun to play with.

If you are a Google Earth user, you will probably like it much more than if you aren't.

It's a little pricey for something that is not very necessary..... but then again non-photographers might think cameras are not necessary. :)

But I don't know, if they built this into a camera then that would be a good idea!! I might buy a good camera with GPS.

I imagine that a model with longer storage will be introduced if this initial offering meets Sony's projected sales volume. Right now it's just a test to see if the public is interested in such a device.

We may see this integrated into some of their future camera models. This looks to be where one part of digicam technology might be heading (for the individuals who would find this an invaluable necessity).

ha ha :)

Yes, I do think it would be great to have built-in GPS in a camera. It's pretty amazing. I wonder though why Sony and other companies haven't jumped on the bandwagon with Kodak (I think they introduced this first) of wireless transmission from cameras to printers and such.
Hmmm.... Some things on my wish list of Sony cameras.
You beat me to it.

Seems overpriced to me. For the same money you can get a basic handheld GPS from Garmin that has far more uses and you can stil use it when you take pictures - just record a waypoint each time you take a picture and use the excellent software that's around to match up the waypoint to a map location. You can also get a GPS add-on for Palm and Pocket PC devices for about the same price, and again, these have far more functionality than what Sony's new toy promises. But as some posters have said, for those of us who must have the very latest Sony gadget, then I guess this new thing will tempt them...

The memory is 31 MB and it will be able to store 15 days of gps-information.

That would be sufficient for most people i think.

If it has other uses (navigation?) I might be getting one of these.

Thank you for the heads-up,
