Can anyone make this shot POP !

I made this for you. It's a 4 minute fix. The video shows a retouched pic and then I delete that and start over from scratch and the end result in a few minutes comes pretty close to the finished file. Of course with another couple minutes the results would be perfect but I wanted to illustrate the very basics for you. The video is 117 Megs because I wanted to show it large for you. I did this in PS7 but you can use CS2 too. I use them both and I dont know which you have but they are so similar that you will get it either way.

Don't get discouraged if you dont get the same results in a few minutes after watching. You will get it really fast now that you can see the actual work being done. I wish I had something like this when I started and knowing what a big help it would have been to me made me want to take the time to do this for you.

Please dont judge my sloppy strokes since I was trying to hurry hehe... Now that the mystery is gone nobody will think I'm cool anymore! lol

However, each photo is different so these exact settings wont work for everything therefore I am still a little cool.

I split the file into pieces for you since it is so big. Download all files to a single folder or just use your desktop, and then claunge the .exe file. It will combine the pieces into a single avi movie for your viewing pleasure. (There are 6 files so if you dont see all 6 wait for me to get them uploaded)

No, for some projects I do dupe layers but this type of picture for
me is pretty easy with a straightforward approach just using the
tools as stated. It just takes practice. However, good results can
also be achieved using the layer technique and PWL but I personally
don't feel that yields the same quality.

My first few dozen tries did not go well so developing a freestyle
technique is not something that comes on your first try but after
you do it for a little while you develope a good eye for what
things will look like and what works well. If you plan to keep
trying you might start by getting a dozen different pictures and
just working eyes... then just work blemishes/facial skin... liek
that... pretty soon you will be great at it and you wont ever go
back to the layers. heh... or maybe that's just me.

At first you will find your technique requires you to make smaller
changes over and over but when you get the technique down you will
make intuitive tool choices and make dramatic changes in larger
swooping strokes. When you get to that point the process is so fast
you will wonder why anyone uses the layers.

That being said, I know most people here don't have jobs that
require them to sit and brush pictures over and over for days. Most
people wont take the time to practice this and that is fine. If you
can take a couple things from my technique, a couple from someone
else and toss in a few tricks you learned yourself and soon you
might get better results with your own personal style. Developing
good technique by imitating others is only the start. Over time you
will find your own style to get the same or better results. It is
all a very personal experience. At least that is how I see it.

I am flattered you asked me. I'm still learning too. ;)

It's a little noisy from being a GIF file now.

PWL to lighten
Selective Color to tone down Red
Dodged background darker
Dave Jasek's plugin Glamour Diffusion
Liquify for a subtle face lift and a hint of a smirk
Clone tool for bags under eyes and dark cheeks

There is a very fine line between 'hobby' and 'mental illness'.

I went back and applied some of the items that Glenn shows in his video. The face and neck shadows came out MUCH better (thank you so much Glenn). I still think that a bit more "show", without going too far, helps make this one stand out. Either way, here's another version using semi-nude, glamor, alabaster, and some of Glenn's facial changes.
