Across The Harbour Wall - LX1 pic.

nice pic, but the sky looks strange, this must be post processed :) , isnt it...

Is that noise on the boat hull, or is it painted that way? That's a shocking amount of noise for ISO 80 if it is noise...

Alistair - Nothing strange is going on - I just take picture the same way I have been doing for the past sixty years as a pro and amateur. I am just not obsessed with the technicals of a camera - unlike some. The end product is more important to me.

post processing has always been an important method to get better results. you talk about it as if it's a taboo. you can't be a photographer, if you don't know how to post process your images. this is nothing new with digital, it's been going on for decades. a good photographer is the one who has knowledge of post processing, otherwise anyone can press the button with today's all automatic cameras. Hmmm... I'm curious, as I see a lot of weird looking shots like
this from you, together with assertions about 'out of the camera'.
Either your camera is defective, or you've got a weird workflow, as
there often seems to be strange things going on.

Take this one, the noise on the boat's hull is typical of hdr
processing? Anyway, whatever, have fun.
I agree that the images look 'processed,' but maybe it's just compression and/or downsizing artifacts? Or sharpening problems?
Anyway, I really enjoy the photo itself.

sorry about the patronizing tone, but technical knowledge is everything in photography. photography is a technical kraft that can be taken into art form.

unless you have made the camera yourself, from the ground up, then it would make sense to be proud of shooting without post processing, but since we are all at the mercy of team of designers who dictate to us how to the final image should look like, the only true creativity is in the dark room or on the computer, or in lighting

there is no "purity" in photography. it's simply technique and technology, that starts with the camera, continues into the darkroom or the computer and ends at the print medium. all of which require expertise to create an above par result.

Pete,

I really like the photo. The clarity of the foreground is unbelievable. The grain in the background (water, boats and sky) looks like noise to me, but it almost has a painting quality to it. It looks interesting. I like it. Grain was a way of life in the days of high speed film, and it gave many photos a certain character and texture. Nice thing about digital photography is if it comes out noisy and you like it - so be it. If not, there is always photoshop.

Thanks for sharing.
