sold one and just got another one ..

what a gorgeous lens for the money !
not quite the 85 1.4 I had, but, awfully good !
I'm rediscovering the pleasure of using primes ..

did you sell the 85mm/1,4 in favour of the 1,8 ? Not that i dont agree the 85mm/1,8 is really a gem for the money.

I sold the 1.4 because I didn't use it often enough to justify keeping a lens of that price in the closet ...

Of course, it was spectacular, with an incredible bokeh, but the 1.8 isn't that far behind ...

I very seldom shoot wide open.. so at 5.6 and up, the difference is not that noticable..
Love the 1.8 almost as much as my 17-55 and my 35 2.0 !

If you shoot f/5.6 and up, you can easily get away with something like 28-105 D. It's more versatile and just as sharp.

IMHO the 28-105 is a very soso lens...
why bring that up ?
there are lots of lenses out there, who cares about the 28-105..

I disagree completeley with you saying that it's as sharp as the 85 1.8..
after all, a prime is a prime...
I have never seen raving reviews about the 28-105.. not so with the 85 1.8

I'll stick with my 85, 35 2.0 and my 17-55...

Please ... all the Nikon prime designs are at least 20 years old. They were great performers in the day, but now don't deliver the color and contrast that modern lens designs do, and many modern zooms even outperform them in resolution.

My Tamron 28-75 f/2.8 totally whooped every prime I've owned in that range, look at my profile to see what all I had.

That said, the 85 1.8 is the only prime I still own. I find it an excellent performer with no flaws, but it does need a saturation boost in most cases.

What camera did you use? Did you increase the saturation and sharpness in camera or PP?

I agree...

I have owned the Tamron 28-75... great lens..
I found a better one : the Nikon 28-70.. and the 35-70

I still consider the Nikon primes to be superior to the zooms...
My 35 2.0 is a gem.. so is my 50 1.8..
both beat my 17-55 at their range..

Lionel P

the camera is a D1X..
the only pp was a twinkle of USM .. and resize for the web..

I was really happy with the colors the lens delivered.. straight out of the camera..
Great little lens !
btw, it's a non D Japanese version.. an exceptionnaly good copy !

Care to be a little more specific ? what does primes like the 28/1,4_ 35/2_ 50/1,4_ 85/1,4 not have ? that these new cheap 3rd party zooms have ?

Tamrons 28-75/2,8 dont whoop nikons counter part at nothing else then price, id say that applies even more regarding primes.

Nice shots!

I used the 85/1.8D yesterday for some detail shots of Asian antiques.

I'm still surprised by the excellent image quality this lens delivers every time, especailly at f4 and 5.6 as some one else wrote already.

I know the 1.4 has some magic, but difference is too small for me.

A friend of me who has the 1.4, complains about the terrible PF the 1.4 has. The 1.8 has exactly the same 'problem'

The lens can have terrible PF/CA, shoot it wide open at anthing what reflects light and you'll have terrible PF/CA. Has nothnig to do with quality of the lens, it is the limitation of light at 1.4/1.8 (^^).

that is a very good observation..

the best lens in the world can produce doubtful output if the lighting conditions are bad or unusual..
I also agree that my 1.8 is nearly as good as the 1.4 I had ..
here's a sample I took yesterday :

that's exactly why I have the D1X !
gorgeous coulours right out of the camera !
awesome pics in Raw..
there are many more reasons I could mention...

I agree with your observations about the 85 1.8, 35 2.0, and 17-55 2.8, all three of which I own. I have been trying to use my 105 2.8 today for some macros and having a devil of a time with getting my images sharp. A tripod would help some, but there is a breeze and it would do nothing for that. Of all the lenses I have, I think the 35mm 2.0 gives me the most consistently good results. Unfortunately, it seems to not focus real fast. There is often a real perceptible delay. I am using it on a D70 and D2X.

I just love my 35 2.0..

Unlike what you are saying, I did not find the lens to focus slowly... maybe because I'm using it on a D1X, probably the fastest engine for focus..

but I'm really thrilled about my latest addition, the 85 1.8.. I'm sure I got an unusually good copy..

thanks for the comments..
