Inkjet Art review of HP 9180

I don't include the R800/1800 in comparing the 9180. The output from the 800 can be very nice yet it's not a pro printer. The R2400 certainly is though albeit it's miniscule cartridges.

I think I read somewhere that the 800/1800 were to be discontinued , but that doesn't mean there is something great to replace them with, or at least not mind shatteringly better. The Canon pigment 9500 holds a lot of promise in this class , and is between pro and prosumer. Again if it's ouput only perhaps the 10 colour Canon will be a good choice, but from what I saw the chassis is not pro, the archival life not near what it could be> so not a great fine art printer like the HP.

Luckily all these printers are good, everyone can find a model suited to their needs.

Neil,
I have a question concerning the closed loop calibration of the 9180.

Is there a special "calibrating paper" or do you need to calibrate every different or every type of paper?

that the new HP is far ahead of the R800 I guess eh? Is this what you mean?

Reason why I am asking is that my parents Epson 785EPX just gave up after nearly 7 years....they are looking for a good printer for up to 8x10. I guess you recommend the new HP over the older R800?

Thanks for your comments!!!!

R800 is in a different size class (A4 max) to the new HP (A3+) for a start.

I meant to say that they have been using just 785 for 7 years doing just 8x10 and are looking for a "much nicer" printer. I have the r800. They like it, but I thought since it is older that it may not be the best choice. They are retired and are looking for an "excellent" unit.

They would spend the $ if printer is excellent. Their point of comparision is my R800. The question I should ask of the user here is does this new HP blow the R800 away. The new HP may be more cost effective if newer.

I have the R800. It's OK. The HP should be in an entirely different class of printer. If what I've heard and read is true, the HP will be in a class by itself at this price point. This seems like an exciting product.
