Dimage 7 or Canon G2? (+)

Well,... at the current prices I would take a DiMage 7 over a G2 any day.

I like the SLR like construction and the 7X Optical Zoom on the DiMage. Also having a manual zoom and focus ring on the DiMage conseves batter life and allows for more "professional" type shots. The manual zoom is MUCH smoother than the automatic button zooms.

The Minolta that compares more evenly with the G2 is the S304. The G2 is roughly $400 more, but some of the features are nicer. I like the swivel out LCD screen on the Canon and the flash hot shoe... but I doubt with a point and shoot type (Canon G2) that I would use the hot shoe flash.

I got the S304 as a gift and I can definately say that the money that the gift giver saved and put into accessories (rechargable batteries, charger, Compact Flash reader and an extra CF media card) was well worth it. For any professional stuff I am much more likely to stick with film until the digital printing options get better at lower prices.

I have D7 and G1. They are totally different!

G1 is more pocketable high-end compact, D7 is SLR-like camera with better lens and more controls. I take G1 with me allmost everywhere and sometimes use the video w.sound capability, for more "serious" work I take D7. It depends on your pregerred usage. I have choosen D7 over G2 upgrade mainly because of the 28 mm lens end and 5MP ...

They both produce really beautiful images. If you aren't really into photography already, I'd probably suggest the G2 and if you are they are so different that the choice should be pretty evident based upon the ergonomics of how and what you like to shoot.

For me, the G1 is easier for point and shoot; whereas the D7 is better for SLR type deliberate shooting. It all depends of the photographer and his preferences.

The fact that you asked is for me enough to advise the G2. I am an very happy D7 owner. The G2 is an excellent camera and you can make superb pictures. If you want to invest a lot of time it is possible to make sometimes yes, sometimes, marginally better pictures.
Merry Christmas. Hans.

I know about DiMage features and controls. But if we talk only about quality of image, does Minolta works better? In some test I see a lot on noise...
