Would you buy the 350D now? Or just wait it out? Rivals, etc

That is if you don't need the camera right away. You only have a month to wait for Canon's announcement anyway. Its not a certainty. But they have had one in August every year for the last three years and outside the 1Ds Mark II the 350D is the oldest current Canon model. A 350D at $700 probably will still look like a reasonable buy. But the A100, the D80, and Canon's new model all could be worth consideration.

If for whatever reason you ned a camera NOW, the 350D/XT is not a bad deal and is a nice camera. Not the same build quality as the 20D or 30D but photos are just as good - invest the money in good lenses.

If you can wait about a month, do so and see what new models are announced. You may find one that better suits what you're looking for, or if none of them just thrill you, once they come out the 350D prices will drop a little.

I'm usually against waiting but things are changing quickly in the dSLR market right now. A couple of months wait is worth it before buying into an entire system you'll be using for years. In the meantime borrow a camera!

What exactly will a new 10 mp sensor do that an 8 mp sensor can't do? Is your shooting so specialized so that this incremental increase in sensor pixels will make a difference? My 1d at a "mere" 4mp still takes better pictures than my Digital Reb that has twice as many pixels up to 8x10.

If you wait, within a few months another model will be rumoured and you'll want to wait again and wait ad naseum. Seriously, answer my initial question and just buy a DSLR and start shooting

There are new rivals (The Sony DSLR comes to mind) and rumors
abound about a new 10.2 MP Nikon and a new version of the Rebel.
Should I just put the $700+ aside for the newer camera, or buy now
and be disappointed in a few months when the prices on the 350D
plummet and/or the new models are superior?

I'm not sure what to do.
assuming you're in the U.S. -- you just missed the $100 canon rebate for the rebel xt which ended 7/15. most likely than not, the price will go down soon on the rebel xt regardless of whether there is a new model or not.

You will not escape Canon without an expensive lens for sharp photos.

An XT is an easy choice so I would wait for a new release and think about my lens future. If another brand offers less expensive sharp lenses you need and the high ISO is good enough then go for that.

If you need access to a thorough lens family with good third party info on it then Canon is it.

Notice they don't ship a 18-55 kit lens as sharp as the 50 1.8.
Obviously the kit lens is more versatile.

there will ALWAYS be a better camera "just around the corner"

18 months is "just around the corner" ? No, it's not. Buying a camera and Canon releasing a new one a few days later will really p* you off, buying a new improved camera that Canon released only a few days earlier will not.

Yes, there will always be new products coming out, but the interval between releases is very large in this case, and there comes a point in the upgrade cycle where purchasing current equipment may not be a good investment.

You will never find the right one if you are going to wait and wait for better and better.

I do understand you situation, Photo Show in two months...but...New DSLR annouced in September and what...???...Until you get it in the shop it will take couple of months...then price will be very hight for next couple of months and you will buy the camera in February next year???

I am not going to wait, I have waited long enough.

Well I just bought an XT about a month ago or so. For me the choice was simple. I'm going on a 2 week trip to France, Germany, and Poland in a short time from now. I needed a new camera (my old one was a 4mp fuji S5100). I knew I wanted a dSLR so my choices were the d50, d70s, and 350D. Did I know sony had a new camera coming? Yes! Did I know that the d70s was due for a replacement? Yes! Did I know canon would soon replace the 350D? Yes! Did I care? NO!!

I needed the camera before the trip and thus couldn't wait. Also I got the XT for $580 (no lens) which is pretty cheap. My lens cost almost as much as the body (tamron 17-50 2.8, $450).

The XT replacement will probalby be $900-1000 for the kit and $800-900 for the body. That is still at least another $200+ I would have spent if I waited and missed photos on the trip.

I say if you need it now then get the XT, if you have no need it doesn't hurt to wait.

Agreed. It makes no sense to buy a camera you know is about a month away from being replaced, unless you just need it asap. There will also be more than an 8-10 mp upgrade, at the verty least I am betting on a better grip and build wich matters if you are going to carry the camera for a couple of years. Honestly I think the knee jerk buy now why wait attitude is bad advice in this case. Sometimes I think it just reflects a spoil sort mentality that someone else would have the fun of getting the latest camera.

I think that an increase in mp for the 350D upgarde is somewhat unlikely as this would cause major marketing problems for the 30D which will undoubtedly not be replaced until next year. The changes are far more likely to be more modest but still useful - a larger screen and perhaps spot metering.

I see what you're saying, I guess I'd rather buy something that is current now, because that means when the next-next-gen stuff comes out, I won't be as far behind as if I had bought something that even right now isn't current.

you should first choose a lens system that suit you..then pick a body.

the body is secondary to the lens.

if you are into wildlife, you can do it with Nikon but it will cost you a lot more to get a decent setup..there is no middle ground. the only setup I woudl be happy with in Nikon is the D200 or D2x and a 200-400 VR.

that's a freaking load of money. with Canon I am happy with the XT and the 400mm F5.6 L. just about 7000$ in price difference :)

If you need it now, buy. Otherwise, wait for 2 reasons:

(a) There may be features in the next issue that may be desirable. You never know.

(b) Even if new features are not present, the price of the current model will fall like crazy once the replacement is announced.

Well i just bought my rxt last weekend, got a good deal I think - $1399 CA with 2GB CF and 17-85 lens. Thats good for downtown toronto anyways.. hopefully lol. My point is though, if you can wait 2-3 months, do it. I'd been shopping around for the last few months, couldn't have waited longer. Its a great cam (so far) and thats not going to change regardless of the next model. You may get slightly more for your money by waiting, but how much? Judging by the 30D upgrade, not a huge amount of difference.

This isnt a 30D replacement. I do believe he said 400D not 40D :-)

My opinion is to get the 350D now and spend the leftover cash on a nice lens.

T.J.
My guess is Canon will be forced to respond as well. The Canon
400d will probably be announce shortly after the Nikon's D80/D90
news release.
A 6 month turnover on the 30D! ;-) I do like the idea that a
company can "respond" with a superior product shortly after a
competitor reveals a new one.

I agree that the best camera to get at this point is the 20D,
assuming it can be had new for under $1k. Two years ago I wasn't
even sure of the model... funny how its status has improved with
time!

Do you think Canon will have another rebate for Rebel XT?

I think I will probally buy XT since the replacement will be much higher than its price now and I will probably be tempted to add some cash to get 30D later.

Then think is that I missed Canon rebate, I will probally wait untill they release the new models and hopefully they will give out the rebate again and if XT's price is dropped then I might be able to get XT for $500, who knows :)

The bottomline is that, you shouldn't wait if we need camera now. And never wait for too long or you will never buy the camera. But it doesn't hurt to take your time and decide what is best for you.
