  • I realy beleive that we should rethink this trend of tecno toys for our children. 6 is way too young an age to aprieciate what they are given . Athough the camera companies love you for it. How long do you think it will take befor this camera is dicarded under a bed or couch and forgoten like a christmas or birthday toy ? Invest in a series of good books instead.

Two rugged cameras that come to mind are the Pentax W10 and
the Olympus 720SW.

You may be correct for the vast majority of kids but what about the one in a kids that that little camera inspires a love of photography.

I let my kids use my little Canon P&S, and they love it. Its the Canon S410, probably a couple years old now. I make sure they always have it around attached to a lanyard around their neck.

My 6 year old loves to take and narrate movies- they are hilarious :-)

So... movies with sound would be a great thing. Also movies that go longer than 10 seconds...

Inexpensive and durable are pretty contradictory terms in this space, unfortunately.

I agree with the other poster who said make sure you get a neck lanyard, that's very important. I also use the lens converter and a UV filter on my S80 when my son shoots movies because the lens assembly is fairly fragile and he schmucks up the lens with finger prints while filming episodes of "The House Exploring Channel Staring Mitchell Haglund".

Cracks me up :-)

I would second those recommendations. Both have water resistant qualities, very important for kids who don't treat electronics with kid gloves.

I just got the Pentax for my son who is 15 and he is having a ball with it! Easy to use, the modes are quite visually oriented and he is even enjoying taking movies of his friends.

I think its similar to the old question:

"what car goes fastest over speed bumps?" *

so the natural answer for your question would be 'an ebay camera'. something older and used, but still functional.

(if you are really paranoid, maybe get a model that takes an underwater casing? that offers some protection.)

oh, answer to above:

( ) rental cars, of course!

Ah...yes...they are actually more creative--I have some teeanger friends who have the talent but lacks the expertise to shoot a camera (shaky hands and therefore shaky images even with Panasonic OIS)...however, expertise is something you can accumulate but talent is something that comes with you when you are born...hopelessly I have the expertise but little talent!

I think that Olympus Stylus 720 SW looks rather cool and it is (to an extent) shock proof and water proof.

By the way, the title line does implicate that you want to trade your children for a camera.

UMAX AstraCam, Nikon 21OO, 54OO, 84OO, Canon A51O, Sony Ericsson P91Oi's O.3MP, Panasonic FZ2OK, Fujifilm F7OO

This is nearly two years out of date, but we bought our sons matching (and just-discontinued) Oly P&S 2MP cameras (D520)...has worked out very well, as we were dropping a couple hundred $$ per year on disposable film cameras and processing. Only recurring cost is AA batteries. I'm sure you can find similar models/deals today.

i bought my 8 yr old the entry level kodak,,,,she has done well with it and i think it takes real nice photos...under $100
