Distributors Getting K10D

Just talked to the local distributor of Pentax and he said he will have 2 K10D on the 14th of August. I am going to have a look at them on the 16th if I manage. They are going to be released in September along the new DA 70mm Ltd.

He also confirmed the AA batteries.

... any news from Pentax in Uppsala? I'm tempted to give them a ring soon, they have always been helpful with passing on the latest info from HQ...

They have been very helpful in the past, but now they states that they don't know because they haven't received the technical specification, (I've contacted them via e-mail yesterday). those lists will be printed in September. Seems to me that they are not getting as much information as they used to get from Pentax HQ, could be because they have been a bit "too helpful" with releasing secret information to others...
This is a pity.

Don't you just love the excitement of all these little bits of info that leak before a highly anticipated product! I sure hope I will be able to make it to Photokina to hold it in my hands...

Good thing about the AA batteries!! Thanks for posting Joe! I'm in a similar situation as you, I always tend to travel to dusty places as well. I would love to go back to Mali one day (been there in 2001 and was impressed by the place).

Your're right, Roland, they may have been a little TOO helpful in the past - OK, we'll just have to wait and see. I won't pester them any further, then ;)

Oh another thing he told me, is that it will use the same grip of
the ist D...
The new K10D can only use the *ist D battery grip if it is going to use AA batteries in the camera OR the new propietry battery for the K10D is only 6volts which will match the 4 x 1.5volts of the AA batteries in the grip.
It will be VERY interesting if that is indeed the case!

I'm sure Pentax has a good solution for AA batteries since they have showned so much dedication to this in the past and they have also spoken clearly about the benefits, from their standpoint, with AA batteries.

Tried to order K10D from Pentax US yesterday. They don't know its cost or code # so it can't be done yet. I was able to order K100 about a month before they were available.

The new K10D is supposed to take a grip. I don't know if its the D grip or not. If this camera is the replacement for the D/DS it may run on 6 volts. Leaving higher voltage batt for another body. The K10D could also run at a higher voltage and still allow use of the D grip. This would work a couple of different ways.

1. Less AF performance with D grip because of lower voltage. This would be like using screw thread lenses. We can use them but we don't get all the functions that KFA mount gives.

2. circuitry in K10D could step up the voltage. This is done in electronic flashes all the time. Most take 4 AA but they don't all run at the same voltage. This would cut down on operating time. I remember a Can*n film camera that motored on at a slower FPS. Then when the big bottom booster was addded shot much higher FPS.
3. There could also be a new grip with higher battery voltage and capacity.
This would allow faster AF and who knows what else.

Dual voltage camera would allow use of AA and proprietary batts. It is going to get interesting.
thanks

Here is an extract from a follow-up post:

"The camera he handled had a front control wheel and an optional portrait
release grip, like the D."

That sounds like the camera we saw photos of a few months ago.

Any rumors, if the supposed new models will have manual adjusatble white balance and a reasonable burst rate for series in RAW?

When Mr Torigoe, chief executive of Pentax Imaging Business Corp, was interviewed about the 10Mp prototype on display at the PMA show, he promised that this model would have the performance (fast autofocus, fast shooting speed, low noise etc.) that one expects of a camera in the upper market segment.

I have my doubts that the *ist D grip can be used, because of different physical dimensions. Instead, I believe in a special grip for the new model (but with similar functions as the D grip), and this may very well have the option of AA batteries.
