Have several questions.. How often has Canon come out with a new lens or updated lens? When was the last time Canon introduced a new or updated version of a lens. Is there a chance that other large FL Primes in the DO format are in the making? What does everyone expect in the way of Canon lenses to be released this September? Cheers, Jerry

One could say the 70-300 F4-5.6 IS is an update to the older 75-300 lens.

I would love to see lots of updates:

EF 50 F1.4 MkII
EF 50 F1.4L
EF 70-200 F4L IS (light weight and black)
EF 24-70 F2.8L IS (lighter weight???)

While I am at it, why not a new 16-35 F2.8L IS as well?

Or so I hope!!! The 18-200 would be for my father when he buys the upgraded XT body (another hope, hahahahahahaha) and the 200-500 would be for me.

These are just total guesses, but I don't think they're out of the question. Nikon has an 18-200VR lens that they can't keep on the shelves, and this would seem to be an obvious hole for Canon to fill in their consumer grade line. And as for the 200-500, the 100-400 is due an upgrade but is still selling well so maybe they'll come out with this instead. Many people are calling for a 500 f/5.6L IS prime, but I really don't think they'd spend the time and money developing that when they've got a perfectly good 500 f/4L IS already on the market. But then again, what the heck do I know?

No matter what Canon does, some people will be thrilled, some people will be disappointed, and there will definitely be some surprises. In the meantime, I'm just having fun taking photos with the equipment I've got!

I would like to see:

EF 16 - 50 F4 L (F2.8 and IS are not required. Otherwise it would be very expensive)

... and well, the EF 70-200 F4L IS (light weight and black) is a good suggestion. The white one is just too...ugly.

EF 70-200 F4L IS (light weight and black)
schwing!

that would solve SO many people's problems with deciding between teh 70-200 f/4L and 70-300IS.

why don't L zooms go to 300mm? out of curiosity. it seems like a telephoto zooms go to either 300 or 200mm. why don't they make an L with the extra 100mm on the tele end? is it simply a quality reason?

i can't wait for these new lenses. two reasons -

1) price drop on 17-85IS
2a) price drop on 70-300IS
2b) price drop on 70-200 f/4L

Come on, you should know this... you got your mk2 right after they came to market.

Hey Whimpy, Thanks for chimming in again. Still any doubts there?

If it's possible I'd go for a 20-80mm f2.8 IS usm lense... and make that L as well, just for personal satisfaction (full frame compatible).

Canon has averaged, since 2000, about 5 new or updated lenses per year, depending on what you call a "new" lens. For example in 2004 they released two version of the EF-S 18-55mm lens, one with USM and one without. The next year they released Mk II versions of each of them.

For the first few years after conversion to the EF mount from the FD mount Canon was really busy, with 13 lenses the first year and 8 the next, and 35 lenses in the first 4 years with the new mount.

The following list lumps new and updated lenses together, sometimes there is a real question of if the lens is a new design or just an update.

1987: 2 L, 11 non-L
1988: 3 L, 5 non-L
1989: 5 L, 0 non-L
1990: 0 L, 9 non-L
1991: 5 L, 6 non-L
1992: 1 L, 7 non-L
1993: 4 L, 4 non-L
1994: No new lenses

1995: 1 L, 8 non-L, of note 5 non-L lenses this year are Mk II and Mk III versions of existing lenses.
1996: 5 L, 3 non-L
1997: 2 L, 0 non-L
1998: 2 L, 3 non-L

1999: 5 L, 5 non-L, this was the big year of IS being added to the long L primes, and 4 of the non-Ls are just updates.
2000: 0 L, 6 non-L

2001: 2 L, 1 non-L, the only non-L this year is the 400mm f4 DO, definitely not a consumer lens.
2002: 1 L, 3 non-L
2003: 1 L, 3 non-L

2004: 1 L, 6 non-L, this was the year of introduction for the EF-S mount, 4 of the 6 non-Ls are EF-S and 1 other is the 70-300 DO IS
2005: 1 L, 4 non-L, 3 of the 4 non-Ls are EF-S and two of those are just Mk IIs
Already for 2006: 1 L, 1 non-L (EF-S)

Loosely basing any projections for the rest of the year on the above, I would say we will not see any more Ls this year. We may see a couple more lenses, but they will be non-L.

Of course, there is the other way of looking at it, Canon has not made any major contributions to the L line in almost 10 years, so maybe this would be the year for kicking out all those L updates....but I don't think so. I would, however, be glad to be wrong.

Thank you very much Token. That was nice of you to add your great post to this thread. I am just hoping and wishing Canon would come back out with there EF200MM f/1.8 in a EF200mm f/1.8L IS USM Version. If they did, what would you think a lens like this would cost? $5000.00 or more? How much did the 200 f/1.8 cost new while it was in production?

cheers, Jerry

............Most people have financial resources that are somewhat limited in comparison to their responsibilities to themselves as well as to their families. A few dollars to you might be more than a month's salary to some of us. Comparison shopping based on value vs price is how most of us survive and sometimes even prosper in the long run.

......For Heaven's sake HarryGilbert, what is it about this person that you find so admirable?

teh 70-200 f/4L and 70-300IS.
I have seen some really good results from the 70-300 IS, impressive even, but nothing that would make me decide on this lens over the 70-200 f4 L. And I really like IS, I think every lens should have it. But the 70-200 f4 L is just fantastic, and the IS on the 70-300 is not enough for me to give up the imamge quality.

I do not really understand this question.

There are 5 Canon L zooms that are longer than 105mm on the long end, and 2 of them go to 300mm or more, the 28-300 L IS and the 100-400 L IS.

This really does, in general terms, come down to a quality question. The longer the zoom range the harder, and more expensive, it is to get the image quality up. The 70-200 L's are outstanding lenses in part because they are less than 3x zooms.

But lets look at one particular lens, say the really good, low cost, 70-200 f4 L. Now, if you want to make it a 70-300 f4 L then you will have to put extra cost into it to keep the image quality the same on the now 4+ x zoom. How much extra cost? Who knows, but I bet close to double, call it 1.5 times to be conservative. Still worth it though, but we are not through adding the cost up. Now, the f4 at 300mm is going to cost more than the f4 at 200mm did, probably pretty close to 2x. Now you are at about $2000 for a 70-300 f4 L, and I bet I have underguestimated the price. Want to add IS? Add a few hundred more, probably pretty clsoe to the $2500 mark.
i can't wait for these new lenses. two reasons -

1) price drop on 17-85IS
2a) price drop on 70-300IS
2b) price drop on 70-200 f/4L
positive yet!
Hard to imagine a price drop on the 70-200 f4 L, it is already THE bargain in the L lens line. And the other two lesnes are new enough I rather doubt they drop more than a few dollars anytime soon. Maybe 3 years from now they will have dropped a couple hundred each.

Like you, this is mainly a hobby for most of us and sometimes we have to prioritize.

I agree that people should not be upset or jealous if you decide to indulge yourself every week with an expensive lens, it is your money after all. But given your attitude in this post, I wouldn't blame them.

Oh good.... I was worried at first that this wouldn't turn into another of your popcorn threads, but that should do the trick.
