Why are most first time 5D posts pics of Cats

I do not compare cats with dogs, only with reason. Cat do not
"feel" any emotions, positive or negative (well, maybe they can
feel disdain for us). Cats are consumate predators. Cold, without
emotion or compassion. If you anthropomorphise this, tsk tsk. It
is a misinterpretation of behavior.
Yes, ...It's been a while. ;-)

Don't want a condescension contest( tsk, tsk),...but you are simply wrong on this.

No anthropomorphing needed. Nor reason, for that matter, ...simply un-predjudiced observation. In spite of you confirmed "anti"-status, you would be hard pressed to fit what you could observe at my place into your preconceptions.

Speaking of your own experience is one thing, "eye of the beholder" and all that... but such dogmatic assertions presented as statements of fact are really statements of ignorance(no offense intended,...there is much unknown to all of us ;-)

The "consumate predator'" label is simply a compliment,...they are very good at what they were designed (by?) to do. To assume/declare that that is ALL they are is a simplistic reduction to fit your basic premise.

I would expect you to agree with the idea that your not having personally seen something is not proof of its (His) non-existence.

I assume that you catch my drift. :-)

ever notice how 'nice' a cat is to a sick person....even if the
same cat normally has no time for the same person in normal times).

ever seen how gentle a cat is with a young baby (allowing it to
pull its tail and otherwise abuse it), even when the same cat will
tear strips off a child (or adult) who it feels is old enough to
know better

Dont say cats have no emotions or feelings
I personally know a couple who's child was mauled by their cat after such an event with no prior mistreatment.

I'm not getting into the cats vs. dogs since I just can't stand pets of any kind :)

More on topic I would imagine that 80%+ of first pictures with any camera are taken in the home/around the home. If the person has cats/dogs there are going to be pictures of cats/dogs... Since I have no pets the first picture I took with my 10D a few years back was of the beer I was drinking while unboxing it. :)

There is the pi$$ing on everything, the cr@pping everywhere, even
when the litter box is immaculate.
That´s just not true, you know. It´s only AFTER you don´t clean the litter box they leave those "messages"..
And the horny females, crying
like human babies in the night.
There´s a small operation any vet can do to prevent this. Which is just what should be done when you get a cat. After all, since you are choosing to capture an animal, why not take proper care of it?

Man, I feel sorry for you for missing something wonderful with cats..

...you are so, so, so, wrong. I have noticed, though, that people who feel they must control and dominate others often do not like cats. But cats feel, they think, they love, and they are loyal. You just have to know them and they have to know you. When I am not traveling, but am here in my office, there is a black cat who hangs out with me constantly and he is my buddy and when I come back from my many trips, he always demonstates his joy at my return. When we walk through the corner of the garage and into the house, we are joined by three more cats and they are all great, although Royce can be a nuisance at times.

Mark Twain knew. I have quoted him before, but I will quote him again:

"Of all God's creatures there is only one that cannot be made the slave of the lash. That one is the cat. If man could be crossed with a cat it would improve man, but it would deteriorate the cat."

Hemingway knew, too.

I have some cat books that I am working on. When that great and glorious day comes out that they begin to hit the book stores, pick them up, take a look, read a bit. Then you will know, too, and you will curse yourself for all that you have thus far denied yourself in life.

honestly, I come from a country with cats, many cats, hundreds of times more than in the US, thousands of cats in the streets, cats in most house holds... I also happened to know that in my country there are lower levels of TB and Schizophrenia than in the US so I suggest that you will calm down. I do not advice you to take a cat home mainly because I would feel sorry for the poor soul's having to handle your hysteric manners.

your claims about cat's lack of emotions are the most ignorant and ridiculous claims I heared recently. You seem to watch too much national geographic. Honestly, I cannot imagine a cat having any emotions towards someone that fails to treat it like real gentleman ; > ) anyway, consider a therapy, it helps for exactly such traumas. (I am not mocking, I was beaten by a dog as a kid, spent some time in hospital. Therapy did help for the trauma).

Is there something deep in the Psyche of 5D buyers that requires
them to first try out their rigs on Cats. Check first time 5D
posts and over 50% of them are pics of Cats.

Oh, I get it 50% of 5D's are used to photograph lunch offerings in
Hong Kong Restaurants.

Seems to be what people think. Maybe people take pics of cats because there are never enough stereotyping, self-righteous, low-IQ rednecks to photograph.

Oops, I'm wrong! Tons here!

that way back when Kwannon camera company was formed, page 34 of the first camera manual (I have misplaced my Engliah translation of the Japanese, so I'll have to paraphrase) stated, "The first photos with your new camera or lens should be of a cat, to ensure that the owner has understood the principles of exposure and focus". The original philosophy was that photographers have the same independent spirit of cats. Alas, some have "done to the dogs".....

Actually, to respond to the OP, it's sort of a Canon thing (like "it's a Jeep thing").

I was bitten twice by cats and in both times I don’t think I did any wrong. First was when I was 9 years old, my aunt had a cat and I wanted to pat him. The cat already knew me and I did not do anything wrong but as soon as I stretched my hand towards him and… Years later in my university house one of my colleagues had a cat. She used to come at night to my bed and stay on my site while I read until I went to sleep. I would then put her out of my room. During lots of months all was fine until one night when I was going to put her out of my room and she suddenly bite me.

So, I don’t hate cats but clearly too I do not trust them, nor I think they are able of any kind of loyalty. This is not good or wrong it is just the way they are. You did put well in one of your previous posts, cats think they are gods and that you are lucky to serve them. Now I find this quite silly, I already stand many infatuated “gods” during the day to then stand a four legged one.

For years Canon has been accused of giving equipment to prominent professional photographers so that they will join the Canon fold.

Canon didn't really give equipment away, but for VERY special people they did put a cat in the box with their new camera. It was only natural that they photographed the cat with their new camera.

For the elite photographers they not only enclosed a cat but more importantly a new barbecue for those who REALLY loved cats.
Life is sweet (and tasty)!

Darn, I thought that most 5D's were being bought by females, and I
could make a fortune off Pink fitted cases.

from other forums where cats were the favorite target. These P & S owners migrated to DSLRs and brought this custom. It was not like this several years ago when I first got the D60. It's relatively recent here.

I know what I'm missing!

Enless sneezing
Cat hair everywhere
Scratched-up furniture
Smelly litter box

Did I leave anything out?

Yes, cats are cute and some are cuddly and friendly. I've owned many cats over the years, but now I'm cat-free and I'm enjoying it.
